Is This a Decent Deal? (Kogan Probook 430 G2 for $550)

Combining Kogan HK and the eBay CTECHIE deal for 20% off, I hit on the following for $546.40 delivered.

HP Probook 430 G2
i3 5010U (last gen, but fairly recent)
4GB RAM
13.3" HD (not FHD) screen
128Gb SSD

Not as good as the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 that's out of stock, but a bit cheaper.

Finding it hard to hit all my desirables (max 13.3" screen, FHD, 4GB or better, 5th Gen i3 or better, 128Gb SSD or better) under $600, but this hits 4-out-of-5.

Any thoughts? (scrimshaw?)

  • is this one too far out of your budget, lot more specs for not much more dollars.

  • Looks like I have been summoned :)

It's actually a pretty decent deal. Keep in mind the Probook series is basically an 'entry-level' business notebook from HP, and it ranks below the HP Elitebook, so it won't have the polish and rugged quality of other high-end business ultrabooks.

There are also offerings from the Dell Outlet (which restocks every Monday afternoon) and around the $600~800 budget you might even score the very portable Latitude 7000 (12") series unit which boasts a better chassis magnesium alloy construction, and if you're lucky, you might land a 1080p unit with built in MSATA SSD memory. All that ruggedness and optional extras would come at a price though, but are certainly worth the coin.

The Probook is not a bad unit, only slightly let down by the less-than-stellar LED display.

  • Thanks… Will be light use so probably the extra for a more robust Latitude is not warranted.
