Hi,
I am looking to build my own gaming pc and want to take advantage of the 20% off sale ebay currently has. I am not really savvy on what works with what and would like some opinions on what build works. My budget is around 2 to 3k.
Hi,

With that budget you can go all out ..have a look here http://au.pcpartpicker.com
http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_gaming_conf…
This should help you.
Start with a GTX980TI, I7-6700K, 16gb DDR4 ram.
Where can you get these parts via eBay for the ctechie discount?
For GT980TI, only place is here: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EVGA-GeForce-GTX980Ti-6GB-SuperCl… But is currently out of stock. The GTX970 is currently also out of stock
For 16gb ram- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Kingston-KVR21N15D8-8-8GB-DDR4-21… Get two of them. Or one if you decide you don't need 16gb atm. Most games don't "need" 16gb atm. However, they will soon in the future. So if you go with 8gb, get 1x8gb and not 2x4gb. Makes it easier for you to upgrade.
For I7-6700k- http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-Quad-Core-i7-6700K-CPU-Proc… You need to decide if you need the extra power and if you are overclocking. Gaming itself only needs an I5-6600/K. If you arent OCing, then you don't need the K version.
For the other CPU's mentioned above, search the futuonline store.
If you do decide on overclocking, you will need a motherboard with a Z170 chipset. Like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gigabyte-GA-Z170-HD3-Motherboard-…
Thank you Zman. And free click & collect at Woolies/BigW
Thanks all for the replies. Will check all the links.
Hey guys,
Any opinion on if this is worth it on the 20% sale:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/HP-ENVY-Phoenix-810-300a-Desktop-…
i7 4790
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770
16 GB DDR3-1600 (?brand)
With the sale it's at $1200, primarily used for gaming but also some image processing.
100% not. Prebuilt PC's never match the GPU with the CPU. That desktop is like pairing a 4/10 GPU with a 9/10 CPU. You could get a GPU with double the power and the CPU still wouldn't bottleneck it.
A similar PC but with a bigger SSD, GTX970, much better PSU and none of that poor quality liquid cooling system can be built for roughly around 1400 or less
Done a alot of research on this recently, and found out some interesting things.
- The Intel 1155 architecture will be obsolete in a year or two (just one more set of cpu's being released for it), so it's better to go for an AMD mobo.
- And, to back up the above, the Ryzen 5 1600X is much better price/performance than the i5 (mainly due to the extra multi-threading, which more and more games will take advantage of, but in the meantime means it's much better at multi-tasking… e.g. no slowdown when playing a game and switching to some application running in the background (some shares software in my friends case)).
Here's a reasonably future proof gaming PC for about $1500 (minus monitor (about $300), keyboard, mouse, Windows 10):
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/user/Storm_/saved/FYQ8dC (feel free to mess about with different bits (e.g. GPU, RAM, Cooler etc.), but the main thing is the CPU and MB are the best base to start from).
Research:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3186811/computers/ryzen-5-rev…
http://www.anandtech.com/show/11244/the-amd-ryzen-5-1600x-vs…

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/751499-how-much-life-le…
If you can stick Lego blocks together, you can build a PC.
btw I would have chosen an Antech H2o Kuhler, but they aren't compatible (yet) with Ryzen. Some other liquid coolers need adaptors. The one I listed doesn't need an adaptor and is Ryzen ready (and get's great reviews)… there are two versions, 120mm and 240mm, which just need to line up with whatever case you want (120mm fan holes or 240mm fan hole).
Here's my full research for the fellow geeks (formatting isn't good, as it's copied from a Word doc). Prices are what I saw on StaticIce or local shop (Perth), whichever seemed better (e.g. a CPU or MOBO are better to get locally for warranty wherever possible):

Can't really say much without something to start with. Do you have any specifics parts at all in mind? Or completely open to any builds? I just finished building a PC for a friend, depending on what parts are you getting and where you are I can help you physically to build it as well. You can PM me if you want with some description of your needs and the ebay links for the items you're watching.
