Bunnings - Where Low Prices Are Just The Beginning :/

Check out this picture comparison first, to see what I'm talking about

The same occurs across many, many other products at Bunnings. Eg. compare the same model pressure washer at Bunnings and Supercheap. The Bunnings version will have a "B" on the model name, and far shorter hose to save on cost. Is this right? Does the wider public accept this as OK? Who wins in the end? Not the public I don't think, and not the manufacturer who must reduce the quality of their product (and brand) in order to stay in the nation's largest hardware store.

Edit: If I could easily find more examples I would, but I've spent a fair bit of time on this already, it was'nt intended as a public service announcement as many people I've spoken to over the years know about this. Just look carefully next time you're making a ~$100+ purchase at Bunnings, Supercheap, against a 'regular' toolshop. You'll see the differences.

"The same occurs across many, many other products at Bunnings"

Can you provide other examples for those of us too lazy to do the legwork to backup your argument?

    • I think I've done enough, this isn't exactly a breaking news story - it's fairly well known. I had thought!

Edit: And a downvote for not feeding lazyness…? Right-o.

Edit 2: No need to downvote the guy above, he's just being honest.

  • The Bunnings version will have a "B" on the model name, and far shorter hose to save on cost. Is this right?

how how short are we talking about? 5m vs 4m or 5m vs 3m? how much is the price difference between bunnings's and sca's models?

  • can you link to the pressure washer example. i checked 3 bunning model numbers on the website and saw none with a b in front.

Pressure washer example is from 5+ years ago, I've not seen it since as I have'nt shopped for one since, but yes I've heard they no longer have the B. It was so obvious. B for Bunnings, and S for Supercheap. The Bunnings model had a 1m shorter hose but kept the accessories, and the Supercheap model had the regular length hose but no accessories. I chose the Supercheap model. These days I'm sure its less obvious - like on these Makita saws, the regular model number is 842, and the Bunnings is 843.

  • Interesting thread….look forward to more examples

If you look at https://sydneytools.com.au/makita-mt582-maktec-1050w-190mm-7… you can see SydneyTools.com.au are also offering the same Steel plate base.

I guess it is a race to the bottom.

Also, look at the WP thread:

I had to buy a lawn mower. I looked at bunnings one's and they all seemed cheap and low quality.
I ended up buying one from Mowers Glore and this beast has been with me for like 5 years and still runs like new. Only had to change blades once. The guys at mowers glore told me that I would never find similar brand and model in bunnings.

  • Was just looking at buying this circular saw as I saw it at Bunnings today. Might go with the Sydney tools one instead

Have noticed they have a Makita cordless hammer drill there which identical one sells at other tool shops for $50 cheaper. Of course the model number is slightly different but specs are same.
