Going on a flight tomorrow and would like to pick something up around 2-300 dollars (gotta be a store can't eat for delivery obviously)
Are there any sites that compare local stores/airport prices on these cans?
Or any bargains you can help me find? Appreciate it.
Noise cancelling over ear headphones
Comments
Bose used to be a quality brand, nowdays you're just paying for the brand only, quality gone down. Go for Sennheiser or beyerdynamic closed headphone
This'd be fair enough for general headphone use, but the QuietComforts are still considered to be amongst the best active noise-cancelling headphones. The only stuff I've tried that's comparable is the B&O BeoPlay H8s - they start around $640, way out of OP's price range.
In terms of noise cancelling capability I agree, Bose are top. But the other brands mentioned are far superior sound quality. I'd go with the Sennheiser overall. I have a pair of Bose over ears and think they are very over-rated (won them n a competition).
B&O and Bose are the same. They used to be the top audio companies back in 90's. Now you're just paying a hefty price for the brand name. For the same price you can get other brand with much better quality sound. B&O H8 sound good not awesome but do look awesome
@2Poor4Ozb: You're still talking about 'audio quality', not 'active noise cancellation'. Two different things…
@LiamF: you still can get quality and active noise cancellation at the same time
@2Poor4Ozb: What would you recommend in the $200-300 range if not the QC25s (on sale/pricematched)?
I'm a happy user of the QC25s for three reasons:
1) I found the noise cancelling worked better in aircraft than the ATH-ANC9;
2) They take AAAs (which you can find airside at any airport), rather than the custom battery packs of the Parrot Zik/Beoplay H8s;
3) The sound quality is adequate for flying, where you're probably driving them from a phone or the headphone jack in the plane.@LiamF:
Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO
https://www.storedj.com.au/products/BEY-DT770PRO32?gclid=CI_…@2Poor4Ozb: Those are passive, not active noise cancellation, aren't they? OP is specifically after travel headphones, and was asking about ANC…
Ignoring OP for a second: all the passive noise reduction headphones I've tried have been much heavier, and I haven't found them as good at blocking out lower-frequency/white noise (engines, A/C). Fantastic if you care mostly about other people/crying babies, though.
@LiamF: they actually good noice cancelation abit baulky if you dont care about the size sound awesome as well so much details, not as bassy as qc25 and u can wear them for hrs without hurting your ears. qc25 is 196g beyerdynamic 270g. qc25 is better noise cancellation at lower volume (myself never listen to low volume). At the end of the day that my opinion, as we all have different taste in music sound.
This has nothing to do with taste; there's different technology involved in trying to dampen outside noise. Active noise cancellation involves microphones on the exterior and a processor that inverts or phase shifts ambient sound. Passive is just insulation - foam covers etc etc.
Active is better at cutting down on low-frequency and constant sounds in your surroundings (aircraft engines, fans, air conditioners), passive is better at cutting out higher frequencies and sharp noises (gunshots, babies crying, screaming infants). Totally different - it has nothing to do with the bass response or what the internal speakers pump out.
Anything under $200?
Oh you literally meant $2 - $300.
Perhaps a stick of chewing gum + airline headphones? :-PGet the BOSE QC25s. Nothing else really compares to these.
Expensive but worth it.
The Good Guys Ebay Store have the Sony MDRZX110NC Over Ear Noise Cancelling Headphones for $126 less the 20% discount, which should bring it down to $100.80. You can Click & Collect this item, but I am not sure if the click and collect will be ready for pick-up next day.
Link: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Sony-MDRZX110NC-Over-Ear-Nois…What the rip!… Americans are lucky then because this headset only costs $35 USD via amazon (no international delivery though)
http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDRZX110NC-Noise-Cancelling-Headp…Wth! That's $46 Aud. We pay over double the price even with the 20% discount.
Ahhh the perks of living in Australia. The most beautiful country on this earth, and we beautifully pay out of our ass for electronics etc.
Also Bing Lee has it in store for $99, and that's their everyday price. No code required.
My apologies, I should have searched better haha. OP follow Scrimshaw's link. Good find Scrimshaw!
A while ago, I bought a pair of Audio Technica ANC9s from Headphonic. They're not the most fantastic sounding pair I've ever listened to (my friend bought a Beyerdynamic T90 at the same time), but they get the job done. They were ~$230 when I bought them, and are $250 now.
This is an alternative to all of the above and what I actually did today..
I was initially looking at the Bose QC25 as I was impressed with the noise cancelling functionality but it was too expensive.
I bought a pair of ear muffs (http://www.bunnings.com.au/safety-zone-general-purpose-earmu…) and used my normal ear buds for music.
The noise cancelling is similar to the headsets and does not require any batteries.
This is the most ridiculously sensible idea I've heard today. You win the first annual muncan award for outstanding achievement in the field of sensibility. Ⓜ️
I agree, I'll get a set for the wife on our next flight, she will be pleased.
Now to charge $300 each by slapping on a brand name and using sexy colours. Hiring a celebrity to endorse and making a version that costs $500. Well done mate
@muncan: so true, that why you dont buy beats head/earphone. you're just buying the brand name
@2Poor4Ozb: Which coincidently is exactly why many people buy them.
If you're after them for an office, passive noise reduction (usual earmuffs) will probably be better than ANC - my QCs are amazing on flights, not so great in an open plan office.
If you really want to get fancy you could always get ANC earmuffs?
You just missed out on the Bose QC25 for $259.35 from MOVE
Now you can try your luck at $279 from DSE
