Computer Boot Cycle Stuck

I'm off to a crappy start to the weekend. Has anyone had a similar issue and know what to do?
My computer just boots into UEFI dualbios screen (nothing actually loads for me to see other than the heading it sort of freezes) then reboots itself. A lot of the time it will power on cpu fan and case fan and hard drives all power up but the screen just stays black it wont even make it to the bios screen. Then every now and then if I make a significant change to the motherboard like remove a stick of ram it maybe 1/20 times will load fine into windows. I have been trying to fix it all morning.

Basically I have: tried a friends ram stick, ran memtest (no errors), removed every thing (including front USB port connectors, even the motherboard speaker) from the motherboard and added back slowly (does same thing), tried the windows drive on a different SATA port, unscrewed the motherboard and checked out the screws in case anything was shorting, cleared the cmos, removed motherboard battery for 10mins and put back in etc etc.

When it hangs at a black screen on power up the motherboard speaker makes a click like noise, just 1 click every 2~3seconds very faint almost inaudible - it does beep in the odd chance I get windows to load (but as soon as I shut down and turn on again I have the same issue). I would think it would be the motherboard ?? It is a Gigabyte H87M-D3H - it is currently on the latest F10 firmware I even tried to reload the F10 firmware but it says
'BIOS ID Check error" I would love to give someone a hug if they can help me…..

  • I'd say it's either a motherboard or CPU issue. Maybe even a power supply issue?

If you haven't already take your hard drive out and use your friends computer to back it up.

according to http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/319072-30-gigabyte-bios-ch… can happen if you try and put the wrong firmware on your motherboard… You might get the same error if you try and flash the same firmware that already exists though.

Can you try your friend's motherboard that way you will know for sure?

    • Thanks mate. Yeh I'm thinking psu or mobo. I can check the psu as I have a spare but unfortunately not the mobo. But seen as though it will occasionally load Windows when I make a significant change to the arrangement of things connected but won't ever load again after I shut down I'm thinking more mobo. It had been working perfectly up until this morning I loaded a live copy of ubuntu to try and recover a buggered hdd and it never loaded normal again - last night I also left computer on to attempt recovering same drive with Seagates software this morning computer was strangely off. Will check into that too, but I doubt it would be as I don't even get to the bios screen it's just black/blank on startup if it makes it to bios it does the weird uefi screen freeze up thingy and restarts itself.

      • Hmm strange. It does sound like a mobo issue.

Interesting about you trying to use it to recover a dead HDD it could be related but I doubt it.

Do you have a local computer store nearby?

  • bent pins on cpu or faulty motherboard or cpu not supported
    good luck …

    • Thanks Matts. I will pull the cpu and have a look. It had been running fine for the last maybe 3years since I built it. Funny thing that motherboard in the thread you posted is my exact model lol. If it were a bent cpu pin then it shouldn't get into the OS at all you'd think ? I can load Windows sometimes but not every boot. I'm in regional qld so a new motherboard is like a week or two wait :( ..

If you have a local computer store buy something cheapish there for the moment. Then order something decent and sell the cheap one.

  • This will sound crazy but try new removing and renewing the thermo paste on the cpu to the heatsync … you would be surprised how often it can be the issue … cheap fix if it is…

Have you tired forcing it to re-flash the main bios from the backup?

    • I don't have a backup of the bios. But when I download the current one that is actually already on the bios and load it in qflash it comes up with an error like it isn't the correct firmware for the board but it is and straight from gigabyte site, I tried several mirrors to download it all the same error.

Gigabyte motherboards have dual bios. If something goes wrong with the main bios, it's suppose to automatically restore the main bios from the back up. You can force the motherboard to boot off of the backup bios.

        Suggest looking at this.

        • Thanks !!! This fixed it. I wrote a post down the bottom about it.

Having you tried turning it off and…

    Oh wait

Lol, i can appreciate that humour.

  • Because you occasionally get to Windows, your PC may be over-heating. Open the case, set a hairdryer to its strongest cold setting, blow it towards the CPU and attempt bootup. If you get further than usual, that proves it was overheating because it isn't overheating now.

  • First replace the battery on the Mobo. Then try with all hard drives disconnected to see if it attempts to access a hard drive. If it does not fix it, then it is most likely a hardware issue. Next, eliminate the power supply as a cause by swapping in a temporary unit. Test each stick of memory on its own. Same for any Graphics Cards, etc until all that is left untested is the CPU and Mobo. It will be one or the other.

    • thankd boccos. I've done all that except psu will give it a try this arvo.

  • My money is on the PSU for this one.

  • SOLVED. Finally. After trying a different PSU, reseating the cpu and pulling out the mobo and putting it back in again it did nothing …. Still the same. Despite not being able to get into the backup bios as crift85 suggest (I tried all different button combinations) after having done the above it eventually just went into the backup bios (I don't even know what I pressed because when I wanted to get into it it didn't work). It then said the BIOS was corrupt and it restored it now its all good. The backup bios screen is actually what was trying to load when the computer would boot but freeze and restart. Whether it was a combination between something shorting the motherboard and not allowing it to enter the backup bios perhaps?

Now to sort out my broken 3tb drive that I recently lost my data on …..
