I am travelling to japan for a month in december -Jan.
Current plan is to leave sometime around 20-24th of Dec to 20-24th of Jan (a month over there).
When is the best time to book flights?
At the moment cheapest i can find is around $1200 return.

Yeah thats what i am thinking. I got $600 return over October 2 years ago but i am worried they might exclude the dec-jan timeframe :(

you've probably missed the best deals now. Best deals are almost always as soon as flights are loaded 11 months out. You're talking the busiest time of the year.
So book now.

If you haven't booked already by now you've missed the boat. Dec is peak period, esp that late in December. If it was mid November to early Dec you might still have a chance of a cheap flight. I've been to Japan 5 times in last 6 years with 4 of the times in Dec (mandatory leave). Where about are you flying from? Sydney had some good deals with ANA when I checked last year.

2012 from Sydney to Tokyo - $1800~ JAL
2015 from Perth via Singapore to Tokyo - $1350 air Asia to Tok, JAL/Qantas from Tok
If I was you, I would keep an eye on Jetstar as they do some special prices to Japan once or twice a year. I went last March for 500$ return Brisbane-Narita. Obviously March is waaay cheaper than New Years, so don't expect the price to drop considerably.
