Melbourne Motorbike Gear Shops

Hey everybody, I'm very close to getting my bike and my L's (Booked a course already) and was hoping to get my gear before I get my bike. I was hoping somebody could help me out in terms of where some bike gear shops are, I'll be after either a Shoei or Arai Helmet, Leathers (actually can I wear any leather Jacket as we L's have to wear high-vis anyway), gloves and pants, probably going to pass on the boots as I wear mainly Hi-top skates as my motorbike will be taking over my skateboard's job.
But yeah, I'm after a store in Melbourne as I prefer trying on a product to make sure its the perfect fit rather than ordering online and shipping stuff back which becomes a hassle.

Thanks in Advance

    • Thanks mate, they don't look ridiculously overpriced so I'll look into it, though I've currently only browsed through their clearance section.

Just go down Elizabeth Street and try on lots of stuff, then buy on line. You will save a fortune compared to buying there.

When you buy a bike 2nd hand is better than new and NEVER buy from Sumoto. Join Netrider.

  • dont pass on the boots - it doesn't take much googling to realise that poor footwear can cause serious, serious injuries during a crash.

after I had my first crash I was so grateful I had boots - your ankle becomes a cushion between the pavement and a 200kg bike when you go down.

AMX superstore is good - but I bought most of my motorbike gear on gumtree second hand and saved a fortune (and ended up with way, way better quality gear for my budget).

    • What boots do you use?

      • ive got so many pairs of boots at the moment - a pair of Alpinestars SMX5s which I use most of the time, but also some really nice sidi boots, a pair of icon ankle-height street boots, and a pair of forma short-cut boots.

even a pair of the basic aldi boots would do the trick (actually their motorbike gear in general is well worth a look on the rare occasions that they do put it up for sale).

        • Do you ride to work? If so do you have a hard case/luggage options on bike? I really should invest in some boots but pains me to think I've got to carry my bag/helmet/jacket/boots around.

        • @minty: occasionally. I live in Adelaide so we don't get the benefit of unlimited footpath parking like you incredibly fortunate (and sometimes unappreciative) Melburnians. however the Adelaide City Council has opened up some designated footpath parking areas which makes riding into the city for work feasible again.

I keep three suits and two pairs of shoes at work to change into on the days I ride. I just have a soft rear bag (straps on underneath the rear seat and clips off easily). often it is empty save for a tie and tie clip because I'm already wearing my business shirt underneath my jacket (and change into suit pants from Kevlar jeans when I get to work).

It's a bit of a pain and I am fortunate to live very close to the city (and close to a well serviced bus route) so I'm not too concerned about the inconveniences that this method causes. If I lived in Melbourne though I'd most likely have all my suits at work and really commit to commuting on my bike full-time (given the awesome benefits motorcyclists get over there).

        • @xyron:

I am in Sydney and do not get the luxury that you illusive think I do!

One the days I ride in I stay in my bike pants where possible to avoid one more change, got the Draggin' Jeans Chino which is pure black without visible stitching around the knees so looks exactly like business pants which is super handy.

Really should look into getting some boots, a snapped ankle would not be my type of fun aye.

        • @minty: haha i suspect you assumed i was in melbourne because i mentioned AMX, and i assumed you were too because i thought you were the OP!

i can't imagine riding in sydney is a particularly fruitful experience. not much bike parking around the CBD from memory.

    • Hmmm, I'll look more into boots and probably talk to my instructors in regards to gear in general again. Thanks for the heads up though.

  • For the helmet, go and try them in store and walk around like a knob for 20mins, just because they're comfortable for a second doesn't mean they will be after a while, Shark helmets for example just do not agree with the shape of my head, I've had to insert a piece of extra foam for comfort.

For the jacket unless you want to splash out the extra money buy one second hand, try the same sizes of same brand in store first, I have gotten numerous jackets in as new condition (residual of weekend warrior) for <50% of price, do not skim on quality of jacket, you'll be in it for a long time, get perforated with inner liner for winter. Though you're not limited to Dainese or Alpinestars they have been my constant choices because they're so comfortable.

    What bike you getting?

    • I'm getting a Ninja 650L, yes I know, I've been told multiple times that i should start off with a 300, but, I don't think I'll be changing my bike anytime soon after I get it so I'm going big. I'm not too worried about pricing, I have 2K to spend on gear and I don't mind buying second hand jackets, but buying new helmets as I heard its safer, going for new boots, not too comfortable with the idea of another guy's foot sweat all over and inside my boots so new for those, I'm mainly after stores and not necessarily to purchase from either, but to try on sizes and confirm my fit for everything.

      • nothing at all wrong with the ninja 650L, its a great bike and probably one of the best LAMS bikes going around (although it is getting on a bit now - the CBR500RA is also a great option, and a bit lighter/skinnier which is easier for a learner to manage).

        • Hey Xyron, what do you think in terms of leather jackets, can any leather jacket do (ie: Politix, Superdry, Ck) or is it recommended to go to a bike gear shop to buy their biking jackets?

        • @aznkevy: look at a real bike jacket and you'll see the difference very quickly. Fashion jacket will not protect you, you'd be better off with a cheap cordura bike jacket. Revzilla reviews are worth looking at.

        • @OZB Al: Yeah mate, went into Peter Stevens yesterday and had a feel of their jackets, they all had paddings and guards inside them, problem is I'm after something that I can also wear casually as I'm not going to bother switching from gear to casual clothes during Uni. I looked at the Scorpion Custom Indy Jacket which looks neat from MCAS, however with the jackets I need to know they fit nice, could you recommend any shops here in Melb with some casual looking leather bike jackets?
          Once again thanks :)

Xyron, nvm, I got a CBR500R today instead ahahaha

      • You can certainly start on whatever you want, moving from one bike to another is half the fun though, very few beginner stay on one bike for many many years at a stretch, when my missus got her 250 it was so much for fun to ride, you can redline that thing in 4th going 65km and pin the throttle off the lights, you'll not be able to flog your 650 much. Doesn't matter what you get, as long as you're having fun.

DO NOT get a second hand helmet, you don't know if they've been damaged in any way. Jacket and pants is the only thing I'd recommend getting second hand, I wouldn't want sweaty palm and feet as you said. As for the jacket, get actual bike jackets, they've reinforcement in the elbow and shoulder, and get yourself a back protector.

        • Ok, Thanks mate, yeah, I know, heard about potentially damaged helmets, rather not risk my head over saving a couple of bucks really.
