    This code worked for mwah

    • Amended for

    • Can you use the code with that group buy?

      • +1

Yes, this is a better link http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/361501109054

        • Amended for again, cheers.

        • Thanks, any ideas what the hard drive in it? Green, red…?

        • +1

          @cloudie9:

It is about luck. Last time I bought one 5TB from HN for $176, it was a RED (crystal disk info). But majority of others were GREEN.

  • I bought the group buy 5TB drive and the code worked …

  • Here's hoping Futu drop their price on the 8TB Archive drive…

    • What you going to use it for? apparently the 8TB is suited for archive use (meaning you connect it, make a backup and disconnect it, I want it on a server that will be on 24/7 and stream media files across the network, apparently with a limited 2 year warranty you would expect it to die quite quickly.

Anyone know if this is true?

      • I was going to stick it in my NAS and run it 24/7… the NAS mainly serves files and writes are only occasional. Will have to read a bit more into the durability aspect.

        • please report back on what you find out, cause I need to know if what I have heard is accurate otherwise I'll just settle for a 5TB external and rip the drive out, will serve me well for a year till we see higher capacity drives, looks like 8TB WD reds just hit the market for quite a price!

        • +1

@yacman: Had a quick read of some forums and apparently the drive is actually rated as suitable for 24/7 use. I probably wouldn't use it in a RAID array (although people have had success) because rebuilding sounds like a pain.

I intend to just use it with Stablebit Drivepool which from other people's experience also looks fine.

As with any data, I would maintain a backup of critical data like photos and personal files. Media like tv shows and movies I can live without. A program like Drivepool is good in this respect because you can choose data to be replicated across separate drives.

        • @atlas: thanks for that, maybe I was getting confused with a NAS because of the constant spinning of the drive, if I don't obtain files directly onto the 8TB and just do single writes then reads for streaming sounds like it will be ok.

        • @yacman: Yes if you intend to write huge amounts of data in one go then that wouldn't work too well. But if you just incrementally add to the drive then that shouldn't be a problem.

  • made this post in the main thread about an hour ago, can anyone tell me?

is this the WD 5TB external drive that's known to have WD Red's in it? know it's been as low as about $175 but still a decent buy at this price?

    • +1

Seems to be random luck whether its GREEN or REDs. I got REDs in mine, but a lot of others got GREEN.

  • Will computers be able to see all and be able to use the 4 and 5TB's?

    • In newer Windows (XP 64-bit, Vista, 7 or later) or newer Mac (10.6 or later) or newer Linux (kernel 2.6 or later), format using GPT (GUID Partition Table) and you should be fine, assuming not using it as boot drive.

If using as boot drive, then you also need newer BIOS/UEFI.

Mine arrived in a large box with absolutely no padding. It works but is clicking.

    • Like what are the remaining gap look like? Another box of 5tb to go with?

    • +1

They used no protection at all, at least fill the gaps with scrap paper or something so the drive doesn't bounce around inside the box. I would of pay a few dollar extra and get from someone that uses bubble wrap to protect the drive during transit.

  • Am I better off with the WD Elements 5TB or the Seagate Backup Plus 5TB delivered for about the same price?

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J0O5R2I?keywords=Seagate…

  • Can't find a way to contact them and they haven't replied to my inbox, anyone have a number or anything so I can request better packaging?

Looking on their "contact us" page, they have an automated system for processing orders and specifically state that notes won't be read, so can't use that and very concerned for a mechanical drive to be bounced around in transit.

    • Don't bother yacman. This gets a negative vote from me purely because of the packaging and crap service, read below if you want me info.

I ordered one off the last deal and it was in this huge box with no padding, was like a marble inside a tin can when the guy passed it over the counter on pickup. The drive was stuffed and failed WD's diagnostic tool so I sent it back with a buttload of bubble wrap like it should have originally been sent and asked them to send me out a new one using the bubble wrap to protect it. Over a week later and three messages from me and no reply so I had to open a case with eBay to get a refund.

I decided to try again on this deal but this time in the comments field I bluntly said to pack it properly with bubble wrap / padding because my previous drive had to be returned or don't bother sending it at all. So it came today and again the small WD box rattling around inside a massive brown cardboard box with no padding. So unimpressed.

Neg vote from me not because of the price but because of unacceptable service and a mechanical HDD needs to be packed better, they failed refund me on the last deal a week after the tracked returned was received by them and failed again to understand a basic instruction on this deal.

      • As I said after reading there "contact us" section they don't read the comments so unfortunately your effort was a waste fo time, luckily you should be able to get a refund but I agree not worth the effort especially when you can get it for $7 at JB now. Just a shame none of the drives appear to be WD Reds. Is there a way to tell from the serial number or packaging date on the box?
