Online booking for accomodation in Victoria requesting money deposited in superannuation account

Hi,

Would you place a deposit of one night to a bank/superannuation account?

Concerned it could be a scam. Are there methods of payment which will protect me if this a scam?

The website is:
http://www.greatoceanroadtrip.com/

Web site I booked accommodation states the following:

Sorry but we do not accept credit cards. After you
make a booking using the form above you will receive
a confirmation email describing our payment options.

Received an email:

Thank you for your booking.
As you will be aware we do not have card facilities so ask that you transfer
a deposit $xxx into our Commonwealth bank account to secure your booking.
The balance may either be transferred prior to your arrival or paid in cash
on arrival.
Our bank details——
(2 names removed) Superannuation account

(Account details removed)

Please put your name in the description.
Regards and thanks

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well, just be content in knowing that you won't have the protections of your bank or CC chargeback schemes if you willingly deposit money straight into a bank account.

If things do go pear-shaped, you'll have to drag the counterparty to court, or just give up and they'd pocket every last cent.

    I know what I'd do.

And by the way, that website looks shady as.

On the other hand if a self managed super fund owns the property it would be rational to pay directly into the super account. Could you phone bank and see if account is a super fun account. Won't need to know account name so shouldn't breach privacy.

    • The bank might not tell you based on privacy grounds.

If that was the case, couldn't you check any account that you have a BSB and Account number of?

No abn, no contact besides email and mobile, not even an address for a main office.

    Stay the hell away!

It's obvious that this is a co-operative of some kind that is grouping together actual owners of properties. They are using their superannuation account to avoid bank fees, PAYING TAX, and all sorts of other business obligations. All of these things don't mean the owners aren't lovely, genuine people just trying to make a buck out of their vacation rental. What it does mean is that they are cutting corners on the things that protect the consumer.

I think I would avoid it

"The balance may either be transferred prior to your arrival or paid in cash"

    What's wrong with paying cash?
