Fridge + Washing Machine

I'm looking to get a fridge and a washing machine and was wondering if anyone has good deals in mind. Fridge has to be 70cm wide and 160cm tall so not a huge one. No specific requirement but would like to have a good warranty term and a good energy rating. Good value for money will do.

Would like to find a good branded washing machine, something around 8kgs load, good warranty and energy rating. I personally have no idea whether a front load or a top load is better. happy to hear any suggestions. Many thanks.

  • I can personally vouch for :
    http://www.theelectricdiscounter.com.au/
Cheapest place by far (including delivery charges)
No other place could match them, told me i was a sucker and was buying seconds..!!!

    • Agreed. Have used these guys and their prices were unbeatable.

As for washing machines, front loaders are much more water efficient and wash clothes better. (Although there are a few new top loaders claiming to be as good as front loaders on both the points I made above. Can't comment on these).

    • +1 from me. I haven't used them in a while, but they were certainly the cheapest I could find when I bought a fridge, TV and washing machine a few years ago.

  • +2

Good luck in finding a short refrigerator. Hopefully there are some more models than when we were looking. Smeg make a short retro-looking fridge, but it is rather expensive. We ended up having the cupboards adjusted by a carpenter.

Do not buy Fisher-Paykel washing machines. The circuit boards get wet and need to be replaced costing hundreds of dollars. After the "repair" the new circuit board just gets wet too. We found out about this from the delivery men, and yes, it did happen to us. About a month ago, I started hearing the characteristic frequent beeping noises of an unhappy Fisher-Paykel from next door. I wish I had been able to warn them in advance.

Front loader - generally more water efficient. Can be prone to mould/mildew problems. Difficult to wash a small load.

Top loader - my personal preference. Generally have quicker wash cycles than a front loader.

    • useful tips.. thanks

    • Right on the mark there about fisher-paykel!! STAY CLEAR!!

I recommend getting a simpson washing machine if you are going a top loader.. Very sturdy and will last you a long time.

In regards to a front loader - to stop the mould/mildew problem, all you need to do is leave the door open after every wash for a little while.

  • Hey, I am looking to sell my fridge, just because it has getting small for a growing family, would you be interested ?

    • can you give me some details thanks.

  • I strongly disagree with the comments about fisher-paykel !
We have owned 2 in 20 years and never had a problem.
They can't be that bad if they keep winning choice top awards year after year.

    • You are probably one of very few people to get lucky….

My Dad owned and started from scratch an appliance rental business for 18yrs (just sold the business last year) and he said 80% of the time he had to rent out a washing machine was due to Fisher and Pykel machines breaking down (especially in the electronics). Now that would equate to approximately 10 machines per month… That is just one rental business, let alone the many others, and the other people who would just go out and buy another one….

Sorry macfanboy, but the most problematic machines was Fisher and Paykel. My Dad would only buy 5kg or 6kg Simpson washing machines, it proved to be the best heavy duty machine and most reliable, (as well as easier to fix/replace parts when necessary.)

      • Well how do they also come out top on readers choice?
You know the questionaires that people fill out about their level of satisfaction etc.
Maybe they were also very lucky..

  • we just bought heaps of appliances. ElectricDiscounter and AppliancesOnline are pretty good and possibly lowest available. Went to harvey norman with those quotes and they price matched it. So, god the same price as them but get extra service considering they are not online store.

  • Just bought a whirlpool 6kg top loader for $625 (display price $649) at Hornsby biglee + $45 delivery and $95 for extra 4yrs warranty. Total = $765. Compared it to HN, Goodguys and clive peters and it could not be beaten.

Choose Whirlpool because it looks pretty strongly built. None of the plastic looking samsung/LG/F+P brands with electronic buttons and fancy lights. It doesn't have a lint filter though because it's USA made and ppl in USA use dryers rather than hang their clothes.

  • weird…. i bought a 350L fridge and a 6.5L front loader washing machine for under $900 before the $150 water rebate. this was in july 2008.
but then again, i don't care about the brands, maybe thats why.

i got my 32L panasonic microwave for $275 too… and this was just mid of last year.

    all negotiated with good guys.
