$303 return from Gold Coast! That's cheaper than Bris to Melb most of the time.

And you can live like a Lord when there:-)

      • what do you mean by that?is it because of the currency?

        • Currency and everything is cheaper there.

        • +1

Even with the recently introduced 6%Gst, things are cheaper in AUD. Also, best street food in the world.

  • Nice!!

I don't travel anymore unless it's on a premium flatbed haha jokes

    • i thought you were joking…..i couldnt believe you can get premium flatbed for $500 to Malaysia, so tempting

    • I am keen on the flat beds too, but with this sale I was able to get KUL - SYD for as little as $100. So will sit up all of the way at that price. Damn it!

      • Do you mind if I ask which date?

        • +1

          I did a few. ranging $A100 - $116 (in MYR though- about MYR299 - 330) 7 Nov 2016, 11 March 2017 & 26 April 2017.

Check online reviews for Air Asia and weigh up the value. I know plenty of people who have sworn off this carrier due to serious service issues.

    • What are we talking about here? Like, insufficient leg room, or engines falling off the plane mid-flight?

      • +2

        The front fell off.

        • +20

I always pick a seat at the back, so I'm OK with that.

        • +10

Remember that only unhappy customers bother to comment. Half the comments there were because they don't care to read the T&Cs, e.g. date change? All budget airlines charge an arm and a leg for date change. No inflight food provided? Passport less than 5 months expiry? Subpar customer service - Yes, the customer service can be a pain but that's you get what you paid for but you have to do it through the right means. using Twitter or Facebook will get you the quickest response.

Flight changes/cancellation? It happens - that's what travel insurance are for.

We have been a happy customer with AirAsia and happy to see that it have grown to its size today. Our family of 4 with 2 kids recently flew 5 flights in 2 weeks with AirAsia with 4 flights more than 5 hours journey, no major issues knowing that we CANNOT compare it to major airlines like Qantas, Singapore Airlines but certainly on par or better than Jetstar or Tiger.

        • @alexlhb: Ahh, ok. That's great. But dismissing flight cancellations, or late scheduling changes, or people having stuff stolen from their luggage, or luggage not turning up at all, as a product of not reading the ticket properly or "sub-par customer service" is a little cheeky. So is the suggestion that travel insurance miraculously wipes clear any budget carrier woes.

I have written positive reviews AND negative ones, and I don't think it should be lightly dismissed that people should try to warn others from finding themselves in a similar fate.

This IS a consumer forum after all. For good and bad, it's everyones experiences that paint a more accurate picture of a product's performance. That's why we're here, isn't it?

        • +1

          @The Araldited Wallet:

I have written positive reviews AND negative ones,
it's everyones experiences that paint a more accurate picture of a product's performance.

The problem is, for every person who posts positive reviews, there are probably a few hundred who don't bother posting about their positive experience.

Sites like productreview.com.au will be complaint-heavy. If someone was satisfied with their local Coles, or their car insurance, how many of them would bother to look for a website to tell everyone "I had no problems"?

        • @eug: Ok… Forget I said anything. Enjoy your trips, folks.

        • +1

@alexlhb: I've been a customer since they started, and never had any problems with them, I'm lucky I suppose, but I guess many people pay budget fares but expect full-service. I do fly full-service on some routes.

        • +2

People often forget that Air Asia is a budget airline with the aim to get to from point a to b as cheaply as possible. As such, the customer service is not going to be fantastic…it is not a priority for them - all they want to offer is cheap seats so issues like refunds, cancellations, etc are just not something they are going to focus their customer service on. People want to pay budget prices but expect gold start service - that is not going to happen…not on a budget airline (and in fact not even on some major airlines - I hear a call to Qantas can have you on hold for over an hour).

If people lower their expectations of AA, they probably will appreciate the AA product on offer. My family and I have flown AA a number of times. We like their premium flatbed option for the comfy journey esp as their prices tend to be not too much more at times that an economy seat on a full service airline. We do not expect any more of them - a comfortable journey that gets us to where we need to be. And things happens, delays, cancellations, missing luggage, etc - that is what travel insurance is for - to cover these unexpected events (which can occur on full service airlines).

I also think that people are more geared to complain than praise - as often when we complain, we are expecting an action to be taken…but we don't have that expectation when we get good service as we have already received what we wanted.

        • @oldrocker: Yeah… Expecting to have your bags turn up in the same place and time as you, or that your flight not be rescheduled or cancelled at short notice is only for "full-service" customers.

    • +7

It's not for everyone. It's worth it if you don't mind putting up with it for 8hrs then spend the savings on your holiday - I know many of us are in that category.

    • I used Air Asia for a Thailand trip in 2013. The service and everything was fine, but stopping over in KL for a day wasn't a great experience. I've now booked a trip in April with Jetstar - direct from Melbourne to Phuket. A bit more expensive, but worth it IMO.

      • Why was it a bad experience may I ask? Genuinely curious. KL is probably my second favourite holiday destination haha

        • I think it was just because we seemed to stay in a dodgy area. Didn't really think about it, just wanted somewhere cheap for a night before our flight to Thailand. Ventured into the main city which seemed nice enough, however I'd rather fly directly to Thailand and avoid a stopover this time.

        • What`s your favourite?

        • @bulletNOVA: New York City

        • @Klayemore: ahh fair enough, there are some dodgy places in KL. Next time stay in the "golden triangle" and give KL another shot :)

        • +1

@justcallmeboss: i am just wondering do you travel a lot? What make you think kl deserved the no 2 spot

        • @bulletNOVA: I do travel as much as I can! :)

I think KL is my number 2, cause:
          1) i feel like a king there, the exchange rate and cost of things are ridiculously in our favour
          2) food is AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING
          3) the people are friendly
          4) did I mention the food?

Haha really to sum it up, affordability and the cuisine is what makes it my number 2. The only reason it's not number one is because New York is number 1, and I am obsessed with that city!

        • @justcallmeboss: I see. Just wondering though, do a lot of people from Aus know about Malaysia or just popular between travelers in Aus who usually go to Asian countries for vacation? Havent been to Ny so I cant really say much but I gotta agree about the food in MAS though

Just took air Asia recently… Had low expectations but turned out really well.. Make sure u pre order a meal (nasi lemak and chicken rice are amazing….)

I paid 570 including baggage so with this price is definitely a GO GO!

      Just enjoy screw the haters

      • Big breakfast is great for those with a big appetite. Although sometimes they don't heat it enough. their coffee is sensational !!!

I'm sorry, I had accidentally clicked the 'full list of flights from airasia' link on the left instead of the 'deal' on the right. Sorry.

Wow, I hope you feel like a bit of a jerk right now Makato. At least a helpful jerk.

    • are you trying to make a joke that taking Air Asia is like buying a one way ticket?

      • -5

        Nah, that's Malaysia Airlines.

        • I'm sorry for accusing you. I've just had a look through airasia website and the website makes it look like it's a one way trip.

        • @supervigilante:
No problem, Im still getting used to this site. Its doesnt exactly have an intuitive user interface

Hey AW, with a handle like yours it is time that we heard more from you HeHe!!

  • The waiting room is getting longer and longer…

  • Is it just me or are there no promo deals towards early December (specifically Gold Coast to Kuala Lumpur). Seems like the travel dates are misleading as it doesn't cover the whole date range..

    • AirAsia is infamous for their "Embargo Period" exclusions during sales without actually disclosing what dates are included within the embargo period…

      • I agree. Especially around Xmas.

    • It's part of the game to find the flights that have seats on special.

    • I can't find any cheap fares in the beginning of Jan. It's killing me, I want this deal so bad.

      • Depends where you want to go. Still cheap onward flights from KL available. Eg from KL to CTS still have some promo seats.

  • Been meaning to buy some tickets for a family holiday to Malaysia later this year..

    • +1

Why would you want to go two times

      • He He. Obviously you've been there once!

      • Lol I've been about a dozen times.. Actually once you get out of kl, it's quite nice

  • It's weird that I can find flights OOL-KUL and KUL-CTS but search won't link them together.

    • Not all sectors has Fly-Thru options

  • If you were to miss your flight(s), do they automatically charge you a ~$50AUD cancellation fee (per sector)? Or, is that just if you're attempting to claim a refund on airport taxes?

    • You can claim airport tax - admin fee

      • admin fee being the ~$50 they charge you? Will they charge you that if you don't attempt to claim the airport tax?

        • Admin fee is not $50, it depends on the route, check their website or chat with them and they will tell you.

Flight is cheaper in KUL base, so split and combine the booking when you can to get even cheaper price.
I.e MEL-KUL-MEL, should be book with separate booking, MEL -KUL and KUL-MEL
KUL-NRT-KUL should be book on 1 booking.

If you book MEL-NRT-MEL, you should book like this MEL-KUL, KUL-NRT-KUL, KUL-MEL. This will save you $40-$50+ AUD. Remember to use Paypal to pay for fare in AUD and 28Degree/Citibank+/ColesMC to pay for non-AUD fare, do not use AIrasia conversion.

I can book Airasia flight cheaper than their advertised price ;) just follow my concept above and you will see. There is exception to to rule that you should check as well. Sometimes AA has promo for certain destination and it is cheaper to look beyond your destination.

For example: AA recently has sale to Beijing, so MEL-PEK is $214 while MEL-KUL IS $369 so you can just buy the other flight and get off at KL. The usual destination that these arbitrage happens are HKT, SGN, BKK.

    • thanks for that

    • I used AUD and POLi to get the lower fees (didn't compare with MYR and Citibank conversion but for those $3 flights I bought I suppose it would turn out better).

AirAsia's website failed so many times. It used my old search price that I already bought with POLi and reused it for my new purchase ex-Australia with PayPal (it was lower but they'd probably give me more headaches). Then POLi took my money for another booking an hour later but AirAsia timed out and failed to confirm my flight - for 40 minutes…

I also booked separate legs after peck mentioned sub-100 fares above. The best deals were within Asia and especially Malaysia itself. Shame it's monsoon season in November since the islands east of the Malaysian peninsula would have been nice.

    • +1

I agree :)) And I always book DMK - KUL and KUL - SYD separately for a decent savings in comparison to a 'fly-thru' booking.

      • Not always correct, as you can see my example above, in some cases, Fly-Thru is cheaper. Also you can utilise Fly-Thru to the point beyond your intended destination for a cheaper fare. This is something that no search engine can show you.

        Example:
        - I want to go to MEL-HKG, but the fare of either separate booking or Fly-Thru to HKG is not cheap because the most expensive part of this leg is MEL-KUL. As in the case last month it is $369 for MEL-KUL alone + another KUL-HKG ticket.
        - So what I should do is book MEL-HKT ($219 at that time) or MEL-PEK ($214) and book another KUL-HKG. I will just forfeit the KUL-HKT or KUL-PEK leg and my ticket is more than $100 cheaper.

    • Good advice. However people should consider a Fly-Thru booking unless they have a generous time between connections or are prepared to take the risk.

      The benefits of Fly-Thru:
      (1) Missed connection coverage. Meaning that they will book you onto the next flight free of charge. AirAsia also state that they will provide food/drink and accommodation (discretionally).
      (2) In addition to this Fly-Thru also means that you will not have to exit the departure area of the airport therefore no need for a Visa.
      (3) Baggage is checked through to your destination.

      • Yes absolutely. A lot of hassle and some risk. It works for me (So far anyway) because I don't have the hassle of checked baggage.

      • Last time I chatted with the check-in girl, she told me that they will change your flight to the next one for free if you didn't book Fly-Thru and missed it as if you booked Fly-Thru if the missed connection caused by delay of your AirAsia flight. I never tried it so can't confirm it.

        • Thanks samehada, it is good to know that it is worth a try! I have booked a Cebu Air SYD - MNL and then a MNL - BKK and I am a bit nervous. About a 4 hour connection at MNL. (2 x immigration) Living a bit dangerous and adrenaline will be high.

        • @peck: Manila is the worst airport in asia. There is no clear signage and announcement for flights, also delay is an issue there as well. Cebu is also not cheap with all the admin + bogus fees added. I will absolutely avoid flying through that area unless I have to.

  • Thanks OP. Booked our flights OOL-KUL-OOL with the return journey in premium flatbed for ~$550/pp.

  • Have traveled with airasia for few years.
I can say you get what you pay for.
if you prebook all your meals and extra baggage i think no one will be having any issue.
Yes quality of flight and service differs from Australia to malaysia than malayasia to india/thailand/bali/srilanka.
i think thats how all flights (have Traveled with singapore/malaysian/emirates/qantas/thai/srilankan) are when they service to an asian country.

    nice price
pity Adelaide doesn't have them anymore :(

  • tempting just to fly there for a few nights at the Hiton

  • Drats! Nothing going for PER > KUL > HND in January.

  • I couldn't get past the waiting room a couple of days ago and forgot about this sale :\
    anything good from Bali ?

    • I never let the waiting room turn me off. I just try to be patient and usually I get in ok. But I wonder why AirAsia don't upgrade their systems. This happens every time that they have a sale. Maybe it is deliberate to stretch out the period of time over which they have sale seats on offer!!??
