MacBook Pro 13" with Retina Display 2.7GHz 128GB (MF839X/A)

Hi All,
Sons 2009 Macbook (white) isn't cutting it at highschool anymore, need to upgrade (I hate the way schools force apple).

Looking at getting a "new" 13" Retina (MF839), after a bit of search the best price I've found via Static is $1,659.00 shipped - http://www.dwidigitalcameras.com.au/astore/Apple-Macbook-Pro…

For convenience thinking of taking this to OW for price match but just wanted to check with you guys that I'm not missing out on a better deal/option?

Thank in advance ;-)

DWI grey imports, don't be surprised if OW refuse to price match.

    • Oh, wasn't aware, any suggestions?

    • Checked that out earlier, it's a 2012 model, would rather buy new

If you're not in a rush you can sign up for alerts from https://refurb-tracker.com. Looks like $1689 is the rate for the refurbished version (FF839X/A as opposed to MF839X/A) of the model you're after.

Also the rumour mill suggests there'll be a product refresh in 2~3 weeks so it could be worth waiting to see what comes of that.

        • Yea kinda in a hurry, it's impeding his work, only 2gig ram, crashes often, not worth upgrading an 09 model when they keep upgrading a resource hungry OS etc…

Yea I was just reading about the upcoming announcements on WP - https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2479791

Think I'll have to bite the bullet and get one from OW, I'm windows blood so hurts spending $'s on an apple.

        • Yeah '09 is probably a bit too long in the tooth to bother upgrading unless you've got spare SODIMMs or an SSD already. Crashing is a bit unusual, it's probably RAM starved but that generally shouldn't lead to a crash, just sluggishness. In case you're not that familiar with OS X, HFS+ tends to chew itself up overtime so it might be worth firing up 'Disk Utility' and seeing if it passes a Disk Verification (select the partition as opposed to the disk).

  • I was reading this post by @JayOh earlier;
"Apple products are rarely discounted, especially current models. 10% is about the best you will find but the apple store will price match up to 10% if you find it cheaper. They will also do 12 months interest free if you want, 18 months for purchases over $2500" (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/226414#comment-3313737)

Not sure I'm understanding it correctly, can't find any info on Apple, no live chat, if I presented the JB price to them would they beat it by 10% & give 0% interest?

  • For anyone else researching this later, just rang Apple, the 10% is off "their" listed price, not the competitors.
So in this case Officeworks have it for $1798, Apple have it for $1999, 10% off basically ends up being around same price, in my case OW are local/convenient.
However if I was chasing/interested in the 0% interest (with GE application etc) apple would be the better option.

Buy discounted wish cards, go into woolworths and convert to jb hifi cards? That would be a 5% saving on $1798.20 = $1708.29

    • WoW Cool! that would cover the cost of a new thule case

Sry but where do I buy the wish cards from?

Then I just go to the smoke counter to convert them to JB cards do I? (are JB & WW affiliated?)

Go here to buy the eGift cards, should come in your email within a few hours.

Now there's a risk they won't convert them, but I believe WW is better than Big W in this way. Just grab the cards off the rack (usually at the front of the store somewhere), take them through the self-service and pay with your gift cards. It will need operator assistance, they generally don't care.

If it was me and I was converting that much, I'd start with a $500 convert (say buy a $500 Wish eGift card - will cost you $475), and try that. At least that way if it doesn't work, you can use that towards your shopping.

But there are many reports on here of people successfully converting at WW.

        • Sry, just wanna check I'm doing this right, hoping to get this sorted/finalised today.

Just registered at cashrewards, its offering posted cards OR eGift.

If I eGift 4 x $500 to my son will he receive it straight away via email?

Then we take those eGifts to WW, grab 4 x $500 JB gift cards, exchange thru self check out, then should be right to go pay for lappy at JB?

          @linoc66:

If I eGift 4 x $500 to my son will he receive it straight away via email?

          Within a couple of hours

          And yes :)

    • Don't the JB cards at Woolworths only come in $50 or $100 amounts?

You should be able to get discounted JB cards. API rewards currently has them for 6% off. A while ago they were 7.5%.

  • Cool! ordered, now waiting for email…

    Really appreciate your help/time ;-)

    • All good :) I hope it works out for you!

Don't forget to save the JB receipt somewhere. Obviously if you pay by gift card, there's no proof on bank statements or email :)

      • Yep, usually scan receipts on to HD before they fade.

Kinda start'n to regret it now, we've been wait'n here for the email for 2hrs, WW gift cards site says "Payment pending", bank says it's approved, can't find a WW number to see what's happening, boys getting impatient

        • Gotta be patient about it, sorry I did say it could take a lil bit.

        • No need for ur sry, just find it frustrating that I've paid with CC, its approved instantly, like other electronic providers it should be instant supply, no idea why it wouldn't be, wasting time sitting here waiting with my excited boy asking every 5min if the emails arrived yet

        • @linoc66:

Lol sometimes they do double check :/ I put through a few orders on different credit cards ($10 cards I'd won), and they called me next day to confirm the order.

Son is gonna have to learn patience. After all he's getting a $2k+ laptop ;)

        • Did it all work out in the end?

        • ~21hours later we've still not received the email/eGifts, just sent them a mesg via contact us telling them to cancel the order, return funds.

Pretty ordinary for electronic transaction/customer service of this kind, perhaps another example why Woolworths Ltd isn't doing to well.

Too much mucking around to save ~$90, off to pay full price.
