Have I Found The Worst Competition/ Prize Ever?

Im sure you know of worse prizes??
Well i was one of 50 people who camped outside Carl's Jr overnight for the opening of the new burger franchise that opened here in Bateau bay NSW
the prize was heavily promoted as " a years free food"
- what we won was actually 52 burger only vouchers - valid on dates so we could only use one a week

Is that even legal- to say you will get " a years free food" and you win that junk???

what other jipps have you found?

I think most "years free food" promotions are like that… were there any stated terms & conditions?

Eat nothing but the coupon supplied burgers until you starve to death. Have your estate sue them for the most blatant case of fraudulent advertising since the Never Ending Story. I don't say the word hero often…

Sorry, channelled Lionel Hutz for a minute

    • 'No win - no fee, and No fries.'

Working title with potential, even if no actual case. :(

Still, Lionel, cross-platform rights could be Huge!

If your profile location is really Brisbane then thats dedication driving 2hrs+ would definately not make any free for a year promo worthwhile i suppose you just wanted to use unlimited vouchers when you visit the store but its their conditions in the end they got the word out there and you were one of 50 Carl's Jr winners just be happy cause the 51+ others missed out.

I think if you were a local and could get there within 30 minutes i think we would of never heard of this rant :)

PS: I actually won a similar comp which is free burgers for a year but it turns out its just 1 specific burger and once per week at the same store even if there is a store closer to me(8min walk), but still nearly 40mins walk to the store i won it at.

  • Do you know if there were any T&Cs for the promotion?

AFAIK they would have needed a permit (and I'm assuming, to have T&Cs available) to run a consumer promotion in NSW.

Regarding "worst" competitions/prizes…I've come across quite a few scam competitions (competitions that are set up with the intention to sell the entrants details for marketing purposes) and other dodgy ones, like those portrait comps where every entrant "wins", but the prize is for the session only and the actual photos cost extra.

    I've also seen a few unusual prizes…

    http://www.wimborneparkstud.com.au/index.php?page=win-a-service-to-contenda
"One lucky person will win a dose of frozen Contenda semen valued at $1210"

    And this one:
    http://wabeefcouncil.org.au/assets/media/the-eye-sea-live-export-tour.pdf
A 50 words or less competition where the prize was a trip to Indonesia on a live export vessel (a bit different to the usual holiday prizes!)

^^^ Though I guess with those comps, the promoters have made it clear what the exact prizes are. It's disappointing when the promoter promotes a particular prize, but doesn't list any T&Cs and/or the actual prize is worth a lot less/isn't the same as what they promoted.

Nearly every single prize that has win a years worth of 'X' is setup in that way. 1 a week or 1 a month

  • Ribs & Burgers done that every time

I think I know a worse one - my local radio station is giving away tickets to that crappy Mrs Brown's Boys show.
You couldn't pay me to watch that.

Hard to imagine someone thought they would have unlimited food available for a year. I'd love the see the judges face when you try and sue them for something you got for free.

Make sure you get Lionel Hutz as your lawyer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqT-AvswCZo

I once entered a Pepsi and Woolworths competition, got the message to say I had won a prize and got pretty excited. My prize arrived and it was a single can of Pepsi. Not even a standard sized Pepsi, a teeny tiny one.

    • A little little can for a little disapointment.

It was a big big disappointment, Pepsi was running a promo with Beyoncé at the time so I thought maybe a trip to see her in concert, or her CDs, or something, but a teeny tiny can of Pepsi?

        • At least it was not Pepsi next. :) that would be grounds for riot lol.

  • Those baby photo competitions where the prize is your spawn gets to work in a commercial, for FREE! without even getting paid! How cool is that! Such good experience for little Apple's CV.

  • Lol your all funny and cheers for the advise but tell me some more of your experiences

I remember many years ago a country radio station was running a 'guess this sound' comp.
People called and said different things, one person said peeling a vegetable, they said no - had to say what vegetable (carrot). In the end some one won a Cassette Single of some song - thats it, not even a full album.

in regards to your prize, I think its pretty reasonable, one burger a week - bet you dont use all the vouchers.

I think I've got you covered…the Missus and I won a trivia game on a Princess cruise from about 120 to 150 contestants about 18 months ago…and won a Princess Cruise's BROCHURE!!!…they reckon they ran out of prizes….I guess the second prize would have been 2 of their crappy brochures!.

    • tight arses, they could have given a bottle of wine

      • I did say this was "Princess"…..nada, not a frankfurt offered, even after the expected bitchinfest!…the only thing they give away is lyssavirus lol

        • my wife keeps mentioning to go on a cruise, I guess PO Princess is a miss, have you been on others?

        • Sorry delay in reply, been away.

          I have been on 5 "local" (Australia/Pacific) cruises…all Carnival…2 x P & O, 2 x Princess and a Carnival.

The 2 on P & O and the Carnival, were good, One of the P & O cruises was great!

Unfortunately both of the Princess cruises were on "The Dawn", which is the oldest of their fleet. The first was uneventful and quite relaxing and pleasant…the second was a nightmare!…plagued with constant plumbing problems, dining-seating errors, excursion bungles (and including excursion-ferry, break-downs)and a virus outbreak, which claimed about 40% of the passengers and crew (including me!)

I won't get on my soap box about ALL local carriers, not disinfecting boats effectively, before embarkation (especially after viral-outbreaks). As I held forth on OB about 3 years ago on this subject.

Sufficed to say that although I was a frequent "cruiser", previous to that last fateful trip 2 years ago, now…I have not been on a local cruise since.

But, don't get me wrong, if you are a family man and you consider the safety of your partner and kids (not withstanding the above), the guaranteed quality of food and accommodation and the organised nature of "the excursions" and sightseeing…..there is nothing better for a relaxing 2 week "family adventure".

My only tips would be…if you can't afford an "outside cabin with views", or better…don't go!…and practice hygiene like a scrub up before surgery.

My personal preference would be P & O but, I guess this is probably a subjective view based on the success of my cruises with them, which may have been just the luck of the draw.

You should try a cruise, even if it's just the once….when they're good they are very, very good!

  • I heard any but the princess is all good

    • Thanks
