Replace mechanical drive with higher spec or SSD?

Hi guys,

So I just got a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD for my laptop (to replace my optical drive), considering upgrading the current mechanical disk since its 5400RPM (750GB). Not sure if I should go with a the Sandisk Ultra II 240GB SSD for $99 or WD Black 750GB for ~$80.

What do you recommend? I currently do not use all the space on my current 750GB hard drive, but I assume as I download more games the space will fill up quite fast. My laptop is 2011 (i7 macbook pro, 1gb gpu, extra RAM) spec so there isn't many new games I could play.

Is the Black really quite loud or has new tech made it just as quiet as an old 5400RPM drive?

Should I just keep my 5400 drive and use that for gaming and media?

Thanks

  • Only you can decide whether you value speed or size more.
I hate the slowness of HDDs, but I put a 500GB 850 EVO SSD for boot and left a 1TB SSHD in for when the SSD fills up.

    • Is there much of a real world difference in performance of a 5400 vs 7200 or is it fairly minor?

      • You won't notice anything.
If budget is a concern get a hybrid drive which is a mechanic hdd with an ssd cache essentially.

SSD would give a massive increase in performance

  • I don't see the point in "upgrading" a 750gb disk to a 750gb disk.

I have a WD Black 3.5" and it's really loud. And as a disk that stores my not currently played games, offers no real-life performance benefit over any other disk of the same capacity. You'll get no benefit what-so-ever just keeping movies on it.

    • Thanks. Ill save my money and just stick with the SSD upgrade and rotate games through the mechanical hdd when I fill up the SSD :D
