Thoughts on Budget Direct Roadside Assist?

It's that time of year for me and I'm looking into alternatives to RACV ($95/year).

Budget Direct seems to be reasonably priced ($75/year), does anyone have any opinion on their service?

Another option I'm considering is AAMI (~$84/year).

Or should I avoid it completely? I've only used RACV twice in the last 6 years for my '02 Mazda.

  • From what I read it looks pretty good. I know with RAC if you have a problem you could be waiting for 1-2hours.

Also keep in mind RAC card gives you fuel discount and entertainment discounts.

  • Try Allianz - they also do roadservice in the warranty period for some of the bigger car brands

  • Try this for $55 https://www.roadsideassistance-1.com.au

I had it for an year, never had to call them out though.

  • May I suggest you should do more homework before you make a choice. Many companies offer Roadside Assistance in a package of some sort, but quite often using RACQ in Qld, and quite possibly RACV down there, and similar elsewhere. I do know there are 'other' RSA suppliers for a yearly fee out there, but does anyone really do a better all round and overall job than the car clubs?

We offered it for years when I was managing a Shell AutoCare, but that was still RACQ and most breakdowns require a tow back for repairs. The days of eg, changing a water pump on the side of the road went away over 35 years ago.

It is like insurance, we all want to pay the least possible premium, but sometime getting a basic price means you will only get a basic service. I am fully old mechanic, I carry tools and some bits, but I have the best RACQ I can get, because that breakdown when I need help is going to be outside the free/cheap 10k radius for towing etc. I know how much towing costs outside the included 10/20 free component, etc. Do you sums, ask the suppliers questions, view your personal driving locations and then make an informed choice.

Which ever way you go, I just hope you don't suffer a break down in the first place, but if you do, remember be safe on the side of the road.

PS, if you choose your RACV, that cover is good for ALL of Australia when borders are crossed, like a holiday etc, where many privateers will not. Food for thought.
