hi guys, me and partner are first home buyer and we are currently looking into installing blinds to our 5 bedroom houses and 2 sliding doors ( 6panels total) to our alfresco .
basically we have a large window in our master bedroom (3 large windows), 2 long windows in living room, standard window size in 4 other bedroom
we had a quote which come down to $8000 for roman blinds and sheer roller combo in living room and 3 other bedroom. curtains with plummet in our master bedroom, another curtain (no plummet) in our 4th bedroom and lastly panel blinds to our sliding doors.
we have no knowledge as to how much is standard to spend on blinds and the salesperson convince us that $8k is the lowest we can get . we havent got any quote from other company yet. do you think around $8k is what we should expect to pay? were we went too crazy on choosing the type of blinds?? we had no idea as to which blinds are expensive or inexpensive , we only went by the looks….
thank you
Blinds Quote- Am I Spending Too Much?

This is very expensive, in my opinion, but all the blind installers charge a lot.
If you can use standard size blinds you can save a lot.
Bunnings has an ok range and also sells custom blinds. You will need to do the measuring yourself, and install them (it is very easy, just get a cordless drill), but I would guess you would spend less than $2000, so well worth it.
You can get the custom curtains done at Spotlight.Masters currently have 50% blinds sell, why not measure it and go there and have a look? Also having at least three (free) quote is a must.
try www.serviceseeking.com.au if you are worry about hard find who to call.
Customer blinds with people come and get it all fix for you and no hassle with warranty? it is of course cost a lot.
PS I am not associated with serviceseeking but I used them few time and all good.
My house is a 4 bedroom house. Luckily most of my windows are standard sizes. I replaced all my blinds for less than $1.5k, mostly from Spotlight when they had their regular 40% off sale and Masters with their 50% off blinds sale on now. 4 blockout blinds upstairs, curtains for the sliding door in my master bedroom, downstairs, 3 window blinds, 3 sliding door panel blinds and I had a cover a large window which is non standard size. I split it up into 4 smaller standard sized blinds.
Custom made roman blinds and curtains ARE expensive.
A friend of mine got their 4 bedroom home fitted with similar to what you wanted. Cost them roughly 9k. This was few years ago.
Roller blind much cheaper. I recently got an investment property fitted with block out roller blinds. 5 blinds fitted for 900. Of course this is vastly different from what you want. Can't compare apples with oranges.
thanks. i would love to do some diy if this meant to save money but with my condition at the moment i am unable to do so. so definetely will need people to assist in installing. i guess from reading the review, the choice i got for the blinds type and installing fee etc seems like i got a pretty good deal already..
The DIY is pretty easy, if you are concerned that it might require strength.
If you have a friend to help it would be 3 or 4 hours of easy work.
Alternatively, an ad on Gumtree, or call a local handyman in the newspaper to get someone to install them for you would likely cost under $200.
The blind companies have salespeople who get paid a commission from your $8000, then they make a profit on the product, and they charge to install.
If you can do any of the windows with standard blinds you will save 75% on those windows.
I paid $2500 for 5 or 6 custom blinds in a flat years ago. Similar in the next place cost in the order of $600 because they were standard size DIY. There is a huge mark-up on blinds.
$8000 might be comparable to what other rip off blind companies charge, but it is not good value. Especially when you consider how long it takes to save such a large payment.
Shop around with some independents.
A year ago we bought a new 3 bedroom townhouse. We had sun block AND see through blinds installed on all 7 windows and 1 sliding door for around $2K. Great quality too. As a year of constant use they still look new with no faults appearing. Mind you Romans are much more expensive.
If your windows happen to be the same size as standard blinds you can also save a bundle.
We originally wanted some romans, some panel and some curtains. But the price was ridiculous. So we went with basic roller blinds. Even then quotes ranged from $5K (from franchises) to $2K from independents. So it's worth shopping around. You might also want to lower your expectations and compromise with something that looks great but not exactly what you dreamt of for a few years.
Wouldn't recommend a particular blind company, their name starts with "Kres…" and ends in "…resta". Put up a few blinds in our new house, and a week later two fell off the wall with the stitching coming apart. Got better quality from Bunnings and Masters, easy to DIY install. Tried a few from Spotlight but their quality not so great either, the rollers on their roller blinds arent very smooth.
i heard alot of complaint from this company.. definitely something to avoid
These guys have an online quoting tool so you can compare what you have chosen:
https://www.yesblinds.com.au/product-category/blinds/custom-…In the past year, I've purchased six verticals from Yes Blinds. 1500mm x 5 and a 2100mm. Under $500 all in. If you have a ruler, pencil and drill fitting is easy.
Believe it or not, their eBay store was always cheaper than their site (it's usually the other way around).
So compare ^ where possible:

Am I the only one who thinks it's a bit unusual for your first home to have 5 bedrooms? My 3rd house is a only 3x2! You must work very hard, good on you!
Speaking of this 3x2 I had to bin all the faded and cracked wooden venetians a couple of years ago. Used blindsonline.com.au to do the whole house roller blinds including 2 large sliding doors (one was expensive because it was a single blind full width 2700mm), most of the rest 1300-1500mm wide and 2 as small as 300mm wide, about $1800 in total. Very easy to fit yourself, and the brackets allow for about 8mm of adjustment for measuring errors. In hindsight I would have got a few double layer blinds as they look really good although we don't need them fro privacy as it's a rear house with a FIFO mostly absent front neighbour.
Could be 40 and just moved out of home.
Hi dp1, just wondering how old is your cracked wooden venetians? Was it "wooden like" PVC or real wood?
We're thinking of putting basswood venetians on our new house, but from some forums post, its not very durable.
have bought from blinds online in the past and was happy with quality and savings.
Yes, it is too much. You could get the same effect by going to vin is and buying some old bed sheets and tacking them up.
Seriously though, doesn't sound too much for a house full of blinds. If you are worried get some more quotes, and ask about cheaper options if the budget has been blown. Up to you wether you save money (old sheets) or get something you think looks good ($8k)
