  • Bloody hell its expensive.. $22 a month for 1 game?

    • No. $22 is for membership. You can rent as many games as you want. This is actually a really good deal. I don't see why its getting negative votes.

      • I guess only 2 questions remain for me before I sign up. I hope the GetGaming REP can answer these.

1.) Delivery time was answered in the FAQs. If I order a game that is really popular and you guys do not have enough copies to dispatch, can I order other games and get them delivered to me while I wait for the other game to be ready for delivery?

2.) If we want to buy your games, are we getting Australian copies or imported copies?

        • +1

          Hi Ragflan, Answers to your questions below;

          1. With the rental process you should always try and keep at least 10 games in your queue, that way if we don't have your No. 1 preference we will ship the 2nd or 3rd preference.
We do buy large Qty's of new release games, so if you do not receive your first preference the 1st time you are almost guaranteed to receive it the second time.
Also, a note on Delivery, there is an Express Return Function, which minimises the time you wait for games to be sent out to you, in short if you flag a game as being Express Returned we will process another game from you queue and send that out to you the same day, we don't need to wait for the game to physically arrive back to us.

          2. All New Games Purchased are Australian Versions, NOT imports. The prices on the games are in most cases cheaper than most retailers, this is because we are a primarily a Games Rental Business, however we do realise that some people would like to own their own copies so we try and make the Games as cheap as possible for these people.

          Hope this answers your questions

  • the usual monthly cost is about as bad or worse than the depreciation of a game's worth.
should just buy and sell games instead

  • Not just one game, 22 per month for 1 game at a time UNLIMITED Exhchanges, keep it for a day or a week, then return it and get another one, and then another and another…

    • when does this coupon expire?

    • -4

Yeh but thats just like selling and rebuying games.

If you buy a new release, finish it within a week and resell you can recoup most of what you paid for (especially if you shop around).

Sorry but i dont see the benefit.

      • +2

Imagine you bought Dark Void for $99. The resale value of the game is not that high. It's a single-player only game which means its replay value is low as well. Now take Darksiders or Assassin's Creed 2 or God of War III, all these games are single players games. I haven't completed God of War III but AC2 took 2 days, Darksiders 3 days, Dark Void about 7 hours.

Your logic only makes sense if it's for games that are high in demand like MW2, or Battlefield 2 that have very popular multiplayer components and the resale value is generally higher.

For $22 a month, in the first month I can easily complete Dark Void, Darksiders, AC2, God of War III, Heavy Rain and a couple of other games that I cannot remember the names of. These games are all released this year except for AC2. I'm damn sure if you pay around $70-$99 for each of these games, and you sell them back to stores, you'd still lose more than $21 dollars. I'd say a lot more, actually.

This is a good deal for single-player games and an excellent deal for impulse buyers like me who bought a lot of games only to realise that it was a mistake.

        • Ebgames 7 day return policy and all those games cost you $0

          • @Wildesy: That's true, quite a few of my friends use EB games as a rental service

        • -2

You sell on ebay/palgn forums. Why on earth would you sell it back to stores and get ripped off?

Also eb games have a 7 day policy and they have high trade in value for new release games.

          $22 a month is a rip off.

          • -1

@hotmustardsauce: Ebgames' return policy is not a definite thing. You cannot return every game you want. At least the EBGames in Melbourne CBD don't accept that. They flag you if you return too often.

            • @ragflan: If the Ebgames you trade at accepts all returns, that's awesome. In that case, this deal is obviously a bad one for you. But there are 3 stores in Melbourne CBD and my friend was unable to return because, 'He returned too often'.

  • Hmm, I've just tried to sign up with the coupon code as above, but it still charged me the full amount:

MasterCard For user plan 25/03/2010 $32.95

    What's going on?

the buy prices of the games are not bad, cheaper than i expected e.g. mortal kombat vs dc for $21

  • Hi quan, I have processed your refund of $19.77 the receipt is being emailed to you now.
When you entered the Discount code did you click the apply button? if you don't it won't apply the discount.

I have tested and all appears to be working ok

  • Thanks for the prompt reply, I did click Apply on the sign up page - not sure why it didn't work then. I've set up my renting queue, hopefully it works well.

  • What payment methods do you accept? Paypal? Any options for those without Credit Cards?

  • We take Visa and Mastercard at present, we are working with Paypal to arrange for their services to be included.

We would consider other payment options such as bank transfer on a case by case bases but these would need to be prepaid 3 months on advance.

If you are interested please email details to [email protected]

  • This is like Netflix and Quikflix, but for games. This is good if like to hire games before you buy. Takes 2-4 days to receive the next game. It would be much better if they express post it. Four days is a bit too long.

  • +1

I wonder how they would lend out games which need CD-Keys. For eg Battlefield relies mainly on online play - It would suck if you borrowed a game and someone else is using ur Cd-key

Oh just noticed that you cant rent those computer games =S i think its mainly PS3 and xbox games

  • +1

$22 a month is too much…..u better going to the local video shop and rent them

    • +2

haha well if you play games everyday and never rest then it might be worth it :P

      • +2

Yea.. its so dear though u would have to be as u say - an extremely hardcore gamer to really get benefit out of that, even so $22, or rather $23 actually per month just to have one game at a time? To me that is just way, way too high

    • Yeah exactly. Especially since renting a game for 7 days from this site is $12 if i read it correctly. I mean i dont think it costs that much at the local video store?

      • For 7 days? I don't think $12 is bad for a week.

Overnight game hire at my local video store is $4.50. Thats 1 night.

      • New releases are about $6 a night at Civic Video [1 of the 2 videos shops within coo-ee of me]. Recent releases get cheaper etc. The range of games is mediocre too. For non-metropolitan punters this could be a useful service.

    • +3

This is a difficult thing..most people are commenting/negging on the price of regular membership.
But what is being put as a bargain is the "60% off the first month" of the service. Which ends up being like..a bit less than $9? Which is pretty decent if you want to go and compare that to the video store. $9 for a whole month including swaps if you get bored of the game.

I agree that as a criticism to the service, $22 is too much, and you could negative them on that basis. But I don't think it's right to neg $9 for the month. People see the negs and think it's a crappy deal and not give it a chance.

      • 60% off first months membership, how long do u need to sign up for? can you sign up for one month? Because if not that's why we're saying its not a bargain.

        • +1

"Cancel or change your Membership - anytime
It’s easy to cancel or change your membership, either by phone or online. If you cancel, your account login and rental queue is saved for a year. There are no cancellation or reactivation fees."

          from 'how it works' page

          • @ChadHominem: Thanks for that info.

So what we could say is the bargain then…

"$9 to rent any game for a month"

that actually is a bargain, no doubt for sure, that's what the title should be, because the standard fees are definitely not a bargain, but if i only have to pay $9 to rent a game for a month - which is what you're saying, then imo that's a pretty good deal.

            • @Iggsy81: exactly, but i think the rep worded it like that for the sake of correctness.
they have 2 different monthly plans and it's %60 off those,
the cheapest of which is lets you keep one game at a time for $22.95 and ends up being
              $9.18 (i think?) after coupon
the more expensive one letting you keep 2 games at once costs $32.95 and ends up being
              $13.18 after coupon,
which is more along what should have been in the description.

both come with unlimited exchanges but KEEP IN MIND the amount of time that it takes sending the game in the post and whether or not they wait till they get the game you're done with back before they send the new one to you (which ends up being like 4-6 days for you), which i'm not sure of. if that is the case then you might want to consider getting the deal for 2 games at once so you can play through the first game and then send it off while you are playing the second game, so there's no long waiting time in between games.

              • @ChadHominem: tbh im not a heavy gamer, but i like to play for an hour or 2 here or there so for me i'd prolly get the $13 one and maybe just rent 2 games in the whole month, even if i only kept 2 it'd still be a good deal really.

Yes i see what youre saying dave, i didnt vote on this deal at all previously (thought it meh), but ill give it a pos in this light

  • -1

22$ a month is absurb. Video easy $2.95 on Thursday rental anygame overnite.

    • +5

…and if you wanted to have that game for a whole month (or different games for the whole month), you'd be looking at ~$90 dollars.

In fact, you'd only need to want to play the rented game 10 days out of the month to come up even - and that's not taking into consideration that the discount makes it $9 for the first month. Did you even read the post?

  • +2

    Positive from me.

Step in the right direction to having these sort of services in Australia - it's a good thing.

    • +1

We already have that service at EB Games ;)
7 day return policy FTW :D

But I guess if you constantly return games at EB, you'll be banned very quickly.

      • -1

Exactly. Its not really a rental service if there's a condition slapped onto it saying you can only return a few times.

        • I agree with pais. And there have been really good games this year thus far. I've made too many impulse purchases and this service could have easily saved me 3-4 hundred dollars on impulse purchases I've made. I bought Dark Void and after completing the game in a few hours I was like, "WTF."

          • -1

@ragflan: It wasn't me that negged you Crownie. Don't know why anyone would. Your comment was informative.

            • @ragflan: I expected a neg for that comment.
              Don't care who did it.
              It was said tongue-in-cheek :)

      • Of course, and I take full advantage of EB's policy when appropriate :) (Most of the shorter single player games, like AC2 for instance)

Having said that, now that I'm content with most of my games being imports, I don't really have a need for this service.

        • +1

I hear you, i buy about everything from dvd.co.uk or zavvi etc, so i never pay top dollar in the first place. I think this seems a bargain to people who buy from aus stores which imo is just silly since australians pay more for games than any comparable country, it just doesnt make sense; if you're already aware of UK prices to buy and OWN the games then this is dear for a rental service.

To add a bit more choice for people. They charge $12.95 for the 1st months membership. I have used them, and they are based in Perth so it only took overnight for the games to be delivered, so they probably better for people in WA.

  • Looking through your PS3 game list….
You have games like 50-cent blood in the sand, GTA IV, God of War III, and others in the G-rated section….

Might want to look into that. Other than that, I can see this being good value for people that churn through their games as long as you guys are able to supply a steady stream of them to your users when they want them - especially new releases.

Also another Q - You offer PC games as well, which often require CD-keys to play (and in some casees, activation). How is this going to be handled when other rentees get their hands on a copy that's been through other people?

    • Thanks for that, for the moment that category has been removed.

We buy a lot of new release titles, our aim is to ensure that members receive the game of choice. we also offer a Prerenting (kind of like a Preorder) when released facility which helps us to ensure that we have enough copies to distribute to members when the game is released, if used by members this sort of feature really helps with out inventory management, and ensures that members get the games they want when they want.

Answering your question re the PC games for Rent, unfortunately due to Copyright Laws in Australia it is illegal to Hire/Rent PC based games, so to ensure we comply, PC based games are only for sale on the site.

  • +2

how about a free trial like quickflix?

  • Used one of these services few years back (they closed up now). The problem was, they never had any new releases available. And paying $X/month for 3 year old games was pathetic. Not saying these guys are the same. Just something to be cautious of.

  • My question is

If I rent a game and post it back do I need to wait for it to get back to you before my next one is sent? I ask as you state 2-4 working days postage. If im on the 1 per month unlimited then 2 rentals per month = 8-16 working days postage. Your average month has about 23 working days. Seems like alot of waiting :-/

  • +3

There is an Express Return Function, which lets us know that you have posted the game back and that we can process another game from your Rental Queue. With this function you don't need to wait for the game you have posted back to be recevied by us before a new game is sent to you.

    • Great!!! Sounds good!

  • Sigh… the Americans get all the good deals :(.

This seems like an Australian replica of Gamefly, which costs $15.95 USD per month (approx $17.51 AUD/month) . They even offer you a free trial and $8.95 USD (approx $9.80 AUD) for your first month of subscription.

    Link to Gamefly - http://www.gamefly.com/
Link to Gamefly pricing - https://www.gamefly.com/join-now/default/

    • Apples / Oranges. There are more differences in pricing models than just comparing the sign up prices.

  • +1

American games are cheaper though. So cost of initial capital is higher here.

  • +1

I've trailed a couple of companies that do this (Movieguys being the best in terms of turn around, variety, game availability and price). I'll give this a shot. The site and selection looks great at first glance, and you guys are only a few suburbs away from me!

  • lol,
Beijing Olympics rated 8/10. I think these guys have a different rating system than some others in the game industry http://au.gamespot.com/xbox360/sports/beijing2008theofficial…

  • +2

You can't seriously compare pricing to the US. The US is cheaper for most things.

I think it's a great idea. I have 2 kids and this will be perfect for them.
The site looks great and it's easy to understand.
The value I will get out of this in comparison to buying games is fantastic.
    I have signed up already.

  • I don't understand why everyone is saying AC2 is short? Took me half the holidays to finish, there is no way I could do it in 2 days? I like the idea of this service, it's convenient, you don't have to deal with the idiots at ebs, and the price seems reasonable enough. Of course some like their games for nest to free.. and that's why companies like Ea are doing the whole CD key thing.

Personally I wouldn't go for this service year long as I just don't have the time and the membership would force me to play more games more often to get value out of the service. On holidays it could be good though.

  • I ordered a game on Friday and surprised to see it already delivered to me. I'm gonna try play the game, send it back some time this week and depending on when I get my next game, I'll continue my subscription. I still think this is a good deal for as long as I want to play those games I don't see the point in buying.

    • I figure if I can get through like 4 games a month, that's around 6 bucks a game per week. I can live with that.

  • Wish I can do that…for me it takes me months to finish one game…LOL

  • Is there a minimum membership term? If I cancel my membership, does it refund or does it wait until the end of the current period (month) ends?

    • You could say the minimum membership term is one month, there are however no prorated refunds given for cancellations during the month, the ongoing monthly billing will cease from the point at which you cancel the service, so long as the all games that are on rent have been returned.

Hope this helps, for more detailed info please refer to the Terms & Conditions of the site.

  • Just used this. Seems like a great pricing model to me, though I play plenty of games regularly.
