Spintel Unlimited Calls/SMS 6GB $39.99 a Month or iiNet 7GB

120

Well Spintel is not very good for broadband, however it is ok for mobile (we have had experience with both).
They use Optus and at the moment this seems one the cheapest 6gb plan, without any lock in or special promotions.

You need to pay $10 for sim so first month is $49.99.

Also Iinet doing for same money 7gb but includes $300 international.

Another good Iinet deal is is $19.99/mth for 2GB and $400 calls/sms.

  • What's their support like?

There is a rep who responds via their facebook page, usually same day. They also have a call centre.

However, I churned away from Spintel pretty soon after I joined because they changed the T&C on their so called "flexible" plans because now everytime you want to make a change, they charge you $5. They also need you to send a message in writing 30 days before you want to leave to another provider.

They also stuffed up my billing in my first month, and kept billing me after I closed my account. So I am quite familiar with their customer support as I had to chase up a number of issues.

Also, after being with a few Optus resellers, I moved to Telstra pre-paid SIMs which were on sale, https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/telstraprepaid and the 4G network is much, much better. I won't be going back to Optus ever again, I will just stick to Telstra now, or in a pinch maybe Vodafone.

  • Telstra doing 7GB for $40:

    https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans-and-rates/mx-…

    Rather that than Optus network.

EDIT: Some confusion as to whether deal applies for the first 12 months only or not. See http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2465595&p…

    • optus do 10GB for $40 …… coverage in bayside melbourne for me was the same whether telstra or optus on a samsung S5 ….. I was chasing mainly 4G data ….. tesltra has about 3600 towers australia wide, optus about 3000 (2015) , and the 600 towers difference is probably rural. Then there is your handset, does it support 700mhz or not.

looking at heat maps … voda would give me best coverage for home as it has the closest tower to home.

I think coverage is where you live and spend most of time and get best usage and how many bands your handset supports.

      • Hi mate where did you get the 10gb from, only saw the 7gb for $40 on the optus website. Is this a special deal?

        • 10gb for $40 seems to be for existing optus customers who have another service with them

        • @dreamz:

Ah ok not a prob thanks for that.

Well Spintel is not very good for broadband,

I disagree, I churned over from Exetel almost a year ago & have had no problems whatsoever. Aside from the fact that I'm now paying a different company a smaller sum of money for a larger (unlimited) quota, there's been no appreciable difference.

IMHO they're exactly the same as every other budget ISP out there.

If you're happy to sign up for 12 months, the Optus deal is better. 7GB instead of 6, no sign up fee, and it includes 300 minutes of international calls.

Just found Iinet, looks same as Optus but month to month.

  • Guys also Iinet is doing 7gb same price, but they give you also $300 international. No contract

optus is 300 mins international, 10GB data unlimited to mob and landline with 12 month sign up for $40 per month …… I think some of the deals are getting so cheap lock in isn't a problem anymore ……. I don't expect telstra to come out with a "compelling better" deal within the next 12 months ….. maybe telstra will do unlimited talk instead of this $1000 cals at $1 per minute at they $40 plans …….

Who uses international minutes … most people I know use wechat or Skype so you get people whether at the PC or out and about on their mobile.

      • International minutes is not that unimportant. Imagine if you didn't have unlimited calls, and lets say you had $0 of calls every month (or each call would be charged), but you had unlimited data. So you would be relying on Wechat/Whatsapp/Skype/Viber/Tango/Line calling all the time. There is still a difference between being able to call direct from your phone line and calling over data. Not to mention, calling over data almost always relies on the other person also having data.

So, I would say there is still definitely some demand for international minutes. There are plenty of people in Australia with family/friends/loved ones overseas.

  • Wouldn't Boost be better. Same price (well 1 cent more), more data (11GB but read how it's works) and on Telstra 4G.

    • Boost is better for people who go out a lot on weekends, otherwise I think a clear allowance of x GB per month is just easier to manage. Nowadays 3GB just feels "not quite enough" for moderate-heavy weekday users (eg. people who don't get wifi while working/studying)… cause you know, use March as an example there will be 23 weekdays, and you only get 3GB for that 23 days.

    • If you need most of your data during the week though it's only 3gb, so not as good as it sounds imo.

  • however it is ok for mobile

    lol

  • Be careful. Spintel charge for call forwarding per call. Got stung badly, as I had used both Vaya & Amaysim prior, who didn't charge.
iinet don't charge call forwarding and you get 7GB and international calls

OP - do you wanna add $19.99/mth for the 2GB and $400 calls? That's actually a pretty damn good deal too. It's arguably a little less attractive (as compared to Vaya's $18/mth), but it's good because it has less calls and more data. I've noticed some comments in recent threads about wanting more data and less calls, so that would be a good option for them.

  • Thanks for the heads up I will edit.
