Selling 2nd Hand Car Privately - Odometer isn't working

Hi guys and girls,

After moving into an area that is crawling distance from everything I need I have decided to let go of my old commodore.

The issue is the odometer no longer works.

Is it illegal to sell it in its current condition?

I am in Western Australia if it matters

  • Only if you're selling it registered.

    • Well that was the plan…

Not that I doubt your word at all - I don't suppose you could point me in the direction where I could find that fact for myself. My google foo appears to be weak.

      • I figured you'd need to get a roadworthy certificate of some type, and this would have been one of the things that was covered, but on looking now, I can find nothing that suggests you have to get one in WA to transfer a vehicle. Is that correct? If that's the case there's nothing stopping you from selling it as-is.

Here in WA as far as roadworthy goes, your good until the cops yellow sticker you.

And never ever let a 2nd hand car lapse in registration.

Sounds like the speedo cable is broken. They are fairly cheap & easy to replace.

  • Firstly take it to a mechanic and see if it is a simple fix. As someone said it might just be a cable that needs replacing.

If that fixes it great. Then list it and sell it. If they can't fix it advertise it registered but "as is".

  • Yes you can sell it. Of course it is undesirable though.

Yes, no roadworthy required in WA.

  • Yeah I spose I could - my main issue is cost/effort of getting the car fixed up vs what I could get for it in its present state.

    • You sound very vague with your answers is the car worth anything! What year is it?

      • I wasn't trying to be vague - The concern was the legality of the odometer thing and I wasn't trying to sell it here I figured the other details were not required.

The thing needs some work/tlc and car values are not exactly my forte.

  • plenty of cars are sold in Perth without a speedo working.
how old is the commodore and how much do you think its worth needs to be asked before you consider booking it in for repair?
