Advice for Multimedia workstation under $1000

Ok, so I'm looking for a desktop to start learning graphic design, video editing and 3d game dev. I started by looking at older Xeon workstations with Quadro gpus. Since then I've read many articles and forum posts that say Quadro gpu's are not really worth it vs equivalent GTX cards.

As such, I have been looking at getting the best i5 or i7 processor with at least 8gb of ram and some sort of a GTX card. I have an ssd that would go into the new build. This is what I am looking at the moment: eBay Is this decent or would a quadro card be better in areas like 3d design? If anyone can suggest a better desktop deal or builds under $1000 that would also be appreciated.

    • Yeah apparently they have crippled Geforce drivers for certain applications, which is something I would not have believed. I don't think I'd be doing anything too resource intensive for a while so might just go with this or something similar.

      • That was quite a few years back

    • Oops, I have an ssd already, so thats one less thing to look for. Because i7 4790 cpu's are around $450, it may be too much to build. So I looked at i5 socket 1151 systems and found one with a i5 6400 and a gtx 960 for $980 on eBay. I guess that's my second option, but think i'd probably go for the first one. Thanks for your help!

      • Xeon E3-1231v3 is a haswell i7 without the iGPU, and its about ~80 cheaper. Or you could look for a Sandy Bridge E5 system (or just a i5-2500K. The CPU has aged rather well, especially when OCed)

  • Went for the eBay offer… but then found Kogan and pc part picker. Better build should have been something like this:

    I7 6700: $414 Kogan
    B150 Gaming: $150 MSY
    16gb Kingsron HyperX DDR4: $130 MSY
Msi Geforce N950TF: $208 Kogan eBay
    1tb hdd from eBay: $45
    Atx Case: $30 local gumtree.

$977 with Atx m/b and about $70 cheaper with h110m micro atx m/b.
