New Canon 80D Vs 70D or Nikon D7200

Hi guys

Thought I would post a thread if anyone knew further details on the new Canon Australian release date and price? Not much info around.

Initially I was looking at the Canon 70D or Nikon D7200 - both around the $1500 range with a lens. Trying to justify if it is worth the wait and also price hike of the new model.

I will be using this mostly for videos. I like the adjustable flip out screens canon has for moving shots while also like the 60 fps the nikon has over the canon 30 fps for video.

80D seems to address both. What do people reckon.. Any videographer experts here? I dont really want to go over $3k for the 5D.

  • If your looking for mainly video I think there will be better options elsewhere. There's heaps of good forums depending what your into, you're probably best looking for the major forums where people discuss these things and the experts/professionals frequent.

  • Can't comment on the camera choice, but if the $1500 ones functionally does what you want I would not jump to the 5DIII, the money saved can be instead spent on some fun lenses which would give you much more creative options.

Spend your time learning and understand what makes great grading great, post well edit, very few people can ever tell the difference between a few hundred dollar lens and one in the tens of thousands of dollars.

I'm a professional photographer, so take my advice for what it's worth, but if you're after a video camera, you're barking up the wrong tree. DSLRs are for photos, not for video. Their inherent design makes them pretty unsuitable for video, generally speaking, due to their form factor, design and OVF (rather than EVF). None of these cameras have 4K support or support for Log recording, which makes them pretty unsuitable for video.

If you're after a camera predominantly for video, my advice would be to go after the Panasonic GH4, Panasonic G7, Samsung NX500, or Sony A6300. All of these cameras will offer a better video experience than any of the cameras you have listed. I also find it strange that you reference the 5D as some sort of benchmark in video, they're terrible video cameras and haven't been considered seriously since the GH4.

    • thanks @paulsterio

I am new to the camera world so these are the only ones been mentioned to me. Thanks for the models you have mentioned, which ones would you recommend that you have listed as being all round photography shooter as well? (my partner wants to use it for photos).

The GH4 with lens are about $2k+? are there lenses expensive?

      • I use the Panasonic G7 for video and it's excellent, much better than the 5DS I use for stills. It's also an acceptably good stills camera. I'd get the 12-35mm f/2.8 OIS and the 20mm f/1.7. Those two are my favourites. There are a lot of Sony shooters who might recommend the A6300, but the lack of f/2.8 zooms is a killer for that system, in my opinion.

  • I purchased a 70D last year and think it's great. One thing to keep in mind, which I only found out recently is that the 70D (and now the 80D too) is limited to 29:59 per recording session. Basically it stops after 29:59 and doesn't automatically start a new file/recording after that time.

From the spec sheet: "Max Duration: 29min 59sec," (pg 5 here).

    • Magic Lantern might fix that and it'll give you a lot more features.
