I would pay the extra for a 850

    • you mean compared to the OCZ ? I agree. Nice find, lyl.

      • Yeah or others, think Samsung in general produce the best NAND at the moment

    • +11

      This IS an 850?

  • Showing EUR 245,00 for me

    • +2

VAT is removed upon checkout (so the price changes to 222.08€), sorry forgot to include it in the post.

  • +1

tempting. this the cheapest 1TB has been for the 850 ? Perhaps it might be better to get local stock for warranty :-/ hmmm still tempting.

  • Still waiting for day they'll be <$300. Eager to get 2 of these.

    • the crucials were during black friday werent they

      • +2

I've always found Samsung to be faster and more reliable than Crucial.

        • +3

We have hundreds of SSDs (enough to establish a baseline) and have a mix of Toshiba, Samsung and Crucial. Toshiba come in some machines but haven't had too much of a drama. Not a single Crucial has failed.

Samsung has been a different story after a magnitude of failures. Certainly not buying any of their drives in the medium term, especially given their track record of dicking around on the 840 TLC and a botched (ie terrible) firmware 'fix'.

        • +1

My personal experience with Samsung SSDs is like ctg as well. I've had a Samsung SSD died within 2 year (very minimal use). The 840 EVO firmware fix (multiple attempts, and the current one is more like a workaround). No firmware fix for 840 (non-EVO) for the read slow down issue. Even for the "pro" series ones, while they top the benchmark tests in reviews, in real life, I don't find them that fast.

While Samsung's warranty service is good, you still need to send the faulty SSD(s) to them. It is still annoying when a SSD dies.

        • +1

@ctg: In my workplace we use thousands of SSDs, except a majority of them are PCIe ;)

840 EVO was always crap with their firmware, but I've used quite a lot of the 850 and Pro series without any issues so far. I've been seeing a lot of people having issues with the new Crucial SSDs, but I haven't looked into it much.

    • me too.

  • Cracker deal lyl :)

  • Why am i getting 367.59 euro? How can it be reduced to 222 euro?

    • all good. getting 222 Euro now. thanks for sharing.

  • These work in 2011 iMac?

  • +1

How do these compare to the evo pro?

    • ……………

  • I'm pretty sure these were round $360 from Amazon UK last year, but this of course is still cheaper.

      ?

      • +4

        sorry i got excited

        • Oh, no worries then!

  • Really tempting…must resist…

Maybe I'll wait for Samsung evo 2Tb to reach AU$500? When will you think this happened?
    1 year time perhaps?

    • +3

the way the pacific peso is coming back in fashion, probably never.

    • currency and also by the time that happens, the 850 EVO will be old tech.

    • +1

Apparently SSD prices are set to drop from 34c/GB USD to 24c this year and then 17c next year. So it's quite possible.
Intel is going to try and compete with Samsung this year too so that will bring prices down also.

  • and does the 1TB use the older samsung controller?

  • +1

    This is what I get:

    Items: EUR 205.88
    Packing & Shipping: EUR 16.20
    (Total amount: EUR 222.08)
    Invoice amount: AUD 354.71

Thats with Amazon doing the conversion to AUD.

Of course the wholesale rate comes to ~$341, but I doubt that you woudl get that close to that and most folks credit cards will charge international conversion fees.

Still its at least ~$100 less than what you pay in Oz.

    • +6

and most folks credit cards will charge international conversion fees.

You're not Ozbargaining correctly if you pay forex fees in your credit card! 28 degrees MasterCard and CitiBank plus will do the currency exchange for free.

    • I had the payment in USD and it was $254US which is $354.71AU
Changing the payment to Euro it worked out to $341.00AU

  • Wasn't there a rumour that an affordable 2TB SSD was to come out next year?

    • +1

well next year is ummm like next year away! So this is as good as it gets THIS YEAR!

    • +1

2tb and a 4tb one. Mushkin was one of the companies releasing one this year. 2tb for 500usd or 700ish aud

  • if it wasn't for all these uni textbooks i would punch a fist full of money through my screen to buy the ssd :(

  • Pity I bought a 500gb the other day. But then again I bought the 500gb because I don't really need 1tb.

  • Thanks OP … picked up a Samsung 850 Pro 256GB. Ended up at AU $159.31 (inc del); cheapest in in WA is $183.

Oh god, just pretty much made redundant today at Dick Smith and this deal pops up… mmm tempting!

    • +2

Sorry to hear, hope you find work soon

    • +1

f dick smith, it's a chance for you to find something better.

      • +5

Agreed, though I have to say in my time there I met many great people and even some friends for life.

Can confidently say too that I gave 100% for my customers, though some were complete imbeciles.

        Life goes on.

        • You'll get that anywhere you go mate. Be it retail, corporate, tradie etc

  • +1

Just bought the same drive on Amazon US last week at US $294. Managed to have a chat with them today and got a 'one-time offer' of 10% as gift card refunded back to my account. Didn't want to go through the hassle of refund/re-order, plus having the drive right now is better so I accepted it. Not too bad I guess.

Thanks lyl for bringing it up :) Not sure if I should buy another one now. Must …resist!

  • Thanks for the deal. I just jumped on it, but may have made a mistake. I purchased with my phone and it appears as if the VAT is still there.

[edit] Checked the breakdown of the order. VAT is $0, but it still cost me $354.71.

    • Did you change the payment to Euro?…I had USD at the start and it came to $354.71

    • AU$341 is the rough conversion if you are paying for it in Euros with a fee free credit/debit card such as 28 Degrees.

If Vat was still there, it would be over $400.

      • +1

28 Degress is a good credit card, no international transaction fee and the currency conversion always seems reasonable.

        • +2

          Are you promoting yourself?

        • +2

@O O: if so, too bad they can't even spell their own name correctly LOL

  • Thanks OP…Grabbed one also some ram yesterday…Wasn't even thinking about them…Oh well

  • It automatically switched to AUD at checkout.

  • +1

Ozbargained. I legitimately got knocked back at the checkout, probably lost to someone else here by seconds. Congrats to those who got one, condolences to those who didn't, it's all part of the game and in the spirit. Thanks for the deal OP!

    • No worries, quite unfortunate you won't be able to get it. Always next time I guess :)

    • This price sets a precedent people! :D

      How long till <$300 AUD?

      • 6 weeks

        • I'll hold you to that! >=O

          Great price… too bad I missed out…

  • 28 degrees charged only $340. Pretty happy with the purchase. Thanks OP.

  • auch the 256GB no longer can be send to Australia :(

  • Got shipping notification just now. I think that's what it says in the email. My German ain't the best.

    • +1

the only germain i know is "Fahrvergnügen Einkaufswagen" which means "the pleasure of driving a shopping trolley" and today that came in handy when i was able to click the "Einkaufswagen" button to get to the checkout.

  • Does anyone know if I need a German Amazon account or should my US one work? Yes I know the deal has expired I'm just wondering in general

    • Us account will work :)
