Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G

Got fed up with the excessive Bokeh/Color fringing of Nikon 35mm f/1.8G, going back to good old nifty-fifty.

So any bargains?

  • Buy second hand ebay/gumtree/etc.

Try stopping down a stop or two? I've had my (Canon) 50 1.4 for years and only used it a handful of times, could just never get into the perspective, 35 is much better!

    • What is the point of 35mm when color fringing are allover the picture like diarrhea? I started with Canon and really liked the 50mm f/1.8 STM, maybe I should not have switched.

Being in Canberra, do not have enough option in Gumtree.

      • What do you mean? The 35mm f/1.8G is one of Nikon's best lenses of all time.

      • Not being a Nikon user I am not familiar with that particular lens, how bad of CA are we talking about, can you chuck up a real life sample?

Also what's your subject? And are you printing to a minimum of A3 in size? I have some great and not so great lenses in my collection and even the not so great ones once printed and stand in a reasonable distance, most lens imperfections just melts away.

        • One sample - https://goo.gl/KqNwDn

Notice the corner/edges. My other pictures also look lifeless, the color is just not popping up.

        • @bargainaus:

Urgh, that doesn't look too good :-/

If shooting jpg a pre-defined or custom colour profile could increase the contrast and make the colours pop a bit. If shooting raw do you use Lightroom/etc? A bit of slider on contrast, clarity works wonders.

As for the CA, Lightroom and the likes should have a lens profile for it, try applying that and it should help remove some at the cost of reducing some sharpness.

        • @minty: yes I shoot RAW, use Lightroom and did whatever you suggested above. Does not help much actually.

        • @bargainaus:

Have not personally had it this bad, local or grey import? If former too late to go to shop and put another one on and see if it's still that bad and replace otherwise?

        • @minty: local, the good guys actually. Nah it's too late by now.

  • Nikkor AF-S 50mm F1.8 lens is very good. I get better images from it then the AF-D. I can't comment on the 35mm, I have not used it. Focus speed is much much faster than the 50mm F1.4. Highly recommended. I have never noticed colour fringing.

    • Which camera?

      • D3300, D7000, D800.

        • Don't you feel 50mm is too narrow for crop sensor? Do you have to back up too much. . Just asking as I'm confused between 50mm and 35mm for my d5500 as first prime lens…

        • @yourpalcliffy: I like longer focal lengths. When using full frame I tend to use 200mm to 300mm. I normally take portraits. I use 50mm on both crop and full frame when I am outdoors, and can step back to fit the background. Unless you are indoors, 50mm doesn't feel narrow.

@zealmax: 50mm on a Full frame is the marriage made in heaven, it's exactly what human eye sees, natural perception. I wish I was not so poor to afford a full frame…

  • Colour fringing can be fixed in post. 50mm on a crop body can be really tight. Otherwise, shop on scumtree? I sold mine for… 180 not too long ago.
