Google Cries about Ad Blocking Software Ruining Your Relationship With It

Looks like Google and some company called Yahoo? - have you heard of them? me either - are having a whine about the "relationship" that you never wanted being "destroyed" by users electing to install ad blocking software and hence having their attention rendered completely unsellable by ol' "don't be evil" Google. Or selling ads if you want to call it that

Must be a delicate business when no one wants your product and 90% of profits are staked on getting the users to take it LEL so they've decided to attack those evil ad blocking software vendors.

Also online advertising is tanking big time thanks to enormous levels of fraud and Apple putting their oar in and actually caring about users having a good experience. See that's where a hell of a lot of paying customers are.

Feeling sorry? Nope, me either.

  • Who actually buys stuff from online ads? I don't think I've ever clicked on an ad, let alone bout anything. I don't know anyone who has.

Like others have said, if I want some thing I go find it myself.. I never buy because I like the ad.

    • When I did see ads it was for stuff already bought. Completely useless.

      • Maybe you're only noticing or remembering those ads because you just bought the item.

You'll normally start seeing ads for things when you're in the research phase while googling for it.

        • That's correct, but what I meant was I have never bought anything due to an ad suggesting itself to me.

  • I didn't use an ad blocker for years but started again recently. I unblock the sites that I think deserve it. How useful was the content on the page I'm looking at and how intrusive are the ads. I inadvertently blocked OzBargain but unblocked it. Like others I didn't really realise it had ads to begin with which is probably because they are so unobtrusive.

I don't block YouTube ads because people make a real living out of that. I do get pissed off after I've watched my 500th Mazda BT-50 ad though (I do not want one, cannot afford to buy one and I don't have any influence over work purchases…).

The main thing is that Google focuses on the ads they serve being as most relevant, unobtrusive and and quick to load as possible.

    • yt ads are from Google, the problem is Google has no idea what to,serve you there so for whatever reason they are always trying to sell the same car. What kind of logic makes them think anyone might buy anything after watching an ad a zillion times.? Why not just serve random ads is there more chance with that?

  • … happy to disable blocking for Ozbargain once made aware now.

Google is so evil it made you believe the devil doesnt exist!

  • Would you rather pay for Google services??

  • Why dont i get ads on safari?

    • Maybe you have opt'ed out from seeing ads in your account settings? I just ran a query. Over the last 30 days, 33% of logged in users have "Show Advertisement" turned off. For those who still have "Show Ads" turned on, 44% of page views are blocked by adblockers.

Basically a lot of logged in users don't see ads.

      • Thats it mate, i must have turned it off.
I just turned it back on to show my support for this wonderful community you have created for us all.

Does it help if i click on the advertisements or it wont make any difference?

Surely you will see a spike in ads being seen and ad revenue when you look back on this months stats?

In general if you are not interested in the ads, it's probably best to turn it off :) Best way to support OzBargain is actually telling your friends about this community.

      • Does just having the ad displayed mean you get a commission? If so, I'm happy to turn them on. If not, and I have to click through for you to get commission… well, I'm not clicking through so it would be pointless. :p

But as below, I'm often telling people about this site to build the community.

    Google should start paying tax.

  • I whitelisted OZB. Just to help out :D

Not everyone understands the prolific detail of the profile information being collected, and the value it holds to those that pay for it.

I imagine many people get concerned once the level, depth and detail of tracking becomes known to them, and they may not feel comfortable with it.

Those that have an add-funded enterprise need to factor this into their future business model, because I am sure there will be plenty of innovation to come in profile protection, e.g. startpage, profile anonymisers and so on will become more and more popular.

Advertisers have no one to blame but themselves for the popularity of Ad Blockers.

I resisted for years the temptation to install one, but recently put them on all my computers. Why?

    • Some ads play sound and make the close/mute button impossible to find. Got sick of hunting through the page to find the offending ad

    • Ads are a known vector for malware installation. I've been hit a few times and I don't visit dodgy sites or run email attachments or unknown software. The malware in question was adware that hijacked my browsing sessions and 'helpfully' kept irritating me with even more ads.

    • I despise the ads that make an Intel i7 system crawl. They're so badly written that they demand all your CPU, and more.

Sorry advertisers, you made the bed you lay in.

All advertisers need to be shot ! Eff John Howard for taking away our guns, I have so many legitimate uses for them ! If this was USA you could just shoot the creators of ads you don't like then simply call your local NRA rep.

Flash ads lock up my computers, I am forced to adblock them.

So many sites have no idea how to show ads on mobile phones, often I see the ad full screen and there is no space to use my finger to flick passed the ad, thereby forcing me to touch the ad and then go to that ads page.

I would be ok with responsible advertising, but that's a fantasy.

Usage based data billing means you are actually paying google to view advertisements they make money on. Am I allowed to have a cry to google about it costing me too much to view its services?!

It's also using all extra battery life to play those advertisements.. Who's going to pay my power bill too..?!

    • -1

Only as long as you also have a cry over TV, newspapers, and magazines too. You pay for the electricity and wear-and-tear on your TV while it displays ads. You also pay money for pages and parts of newspapers and magazines that have ads.

Am I allowed to have a cry to google about it costing me too much to view its services?!

Is google allowed to have a cry over it costing them too much to otherwise give you free services?

I have now removed ozbargain from adblocking.

  • I don't care. I keep using Adblock, Adaware, Adaway, root and firewall block everything that contains ads on my devices. They have malware, redirect to untrustful sites, takes up my bandwidth and computing power. Generally a waste of my time and resources.

When I buy a Google device. I make sure I can root + Adaway first else = no buy

Adblock is the best anti virus/malware solution I have ever installed on my relative's pc.

  • Of course the Ruining of 'relationships' that Google refers to is actually the ruination of the relationship Google has with its customers who pay for targetted advertising and warm sales leads. Funding websites that I like to visit notwithstanding, how is Google's ability to make sales targets my problem? What relationship do I have with Google? I would prefer never to receive any targeted adverts and as a result in respect of this specific relationship I would prefer to tell Google 'it's not you it's me!'

  • Frankly we all used ads blocker but the question is we dont want add blocker on Google or gmail or on trusted sites, so our unqiue experience is not stopped. However, there is a solution to it, you can customize your add blocker software, by submitting a list of websites you dont want ad blockers on. This feature is now widely available.
