SSD Hard Drive for Sony Ultrabook

I need some help from people who know about computers!

I have a Sony Vaio Ultrabook with a small 128GB SSD Drive built in. I want to upgrade it but have no idea what is what etc. The drive in there currently is a 'THNSNH128G8NT'

Any help would be great as according to Sony, its not upgradable. And of course it is :)

I need something not too expensive but at least 256GB as all media is stored on a NAS Drive.

Thanks!
Dan

What you are looking for is an M.2 SSD
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/m.2

Well, to start with, you need to be able to extract the SSD that's in your laptop first.
The difficulty removing the SSD may be the reason SONY told you it's not upgradeable (might be soldered or something)
Do you know or have any idea how to remove the SSD? Can't help if you didnt even mention your laptop model/serial…

When you are able to get it out then check out

Yes, I pulled the cover off this morning to check the number and it is just screwed in.

      Thank for the link.

EDIT, Cool link, loads of info!

You can get the drive serial without opening the cover, but you did it the hard way, which is good and surprising!
Good luck finding M.2 SSD deals~
        Normally I would buy an SSD with 1:2 ratio ($:GB), like for 480GB SSD, I wouldn't get it if it's > $240.
But it all depends on the brand and the performance as well.
I notice there aren't much M.2 SSD deals here, so you might have to get one at RRP :(

        • @DAN13L: Yup that's the one, long rectangle with 2 notches at the end. That drive you linked will work no problem in your laptop.

        • @Cheap Charlie:
          8.1, a little scared of Windows 10.x

Hoping to clone the drive as i dont recall it coming with a boot disk as such (No optical drive at all)

        • @DAN13L: Scared of 10, but you're on 8.1?? I think you're already in the poop.

SSD and Hard drive is two different thing, so your title doesn't make sense, but to answer your question, any M.2 2280 sata SSD should work, not sure if PCIe ones will work so just avoid those.

    • Doh, I thought it was a Solid State Hard Drive. I hate computers.

Solid State Hard Drive are traditional hard drives with an SSD cache component.

Here's what a laptop SSHD looks like: http://www.storagereview.com/images/StorageReview-Seagate-SS…

They are the same form factor as a regular hard drive, it's just got some extra chips on the controller board to use as a file cache.

Solid State Hard Drive do exist, I have one in my desktop PC it's a 4TB Segate SSHD. It has an 8GB SSD slapped onto a 4TB HDD. Can't say it's worth the money though. You can get them for laptops too which is probably more ideal. OP was wrong in his terminology though.

  • This should work

Hi! I found this on eBay and thought you might like it! Check it out now!

    • Thanks, I will take a look. I did google that part number in hope it would be the next one up from mine :)

  • Their feedback is not good - better to try another seller

  • best and sure way is TAKE it to a PROFESSIONAL

if you stuff it up in anyway you will void any warrenty and could make the laptop unusable

    its all up to you

    have a nice day
