There is no need to use a phone line for Unwired. Their plans are very reasonable (see below). In addition, you can actually set up wireless with a router to share the plan between computers. If you exceed your download limit, there is no extra charge. Once you have used up your allowance in either the Peak or Off-Peak periods, your speed will be reduced to the throttled speed (64/64 kbps) until your next billing period. You may check your usage in the ‘My Account’ section of the website. Also, you can buy extra blocks of usage.

  • I've seen DSE shops selling Unwired modems (refurb by Unwired, but with full warranty I'm sure) for $49 if you show a student ID at the cashier. So if you are a student or can persuade one to buy for you, you can get it $40 below list price.

I seriously doubt if they have any way of checking that actually a student is using the modem.

    • Thought I saw a pile of them in Harvey Norman Martin Place for $59 yesterday.

  • Im yet to see someone who is happy with unwired,
Always a bad signal and dropouts.

Pity as could be a great product if worked weel and offered fast speeds

    • I had a friend who was unhappy in the early days when they did overload their infrastructure and DHCP address churn was rapid. I got his router to ping a gateway periodically and to renew the lease if it timed out. I think those days are over and Unwired are now competing with 3G for customers. Unless they come out with WiMax or something to leapfrog, I doubt if there will be any advances at Unwired. He's satisfied with it on the lowest plan. His main gripe is that you won't get the full quota because you will invariably exceed the on or off peak quota first.

The other thing is the modem will work better the closer it is to the open, so you should put it near a window if indoors.

    • Yeah, I have a friend who has never been happy on them, just been hanging out to finish his plan so he can get to a new provider

    • I have been with then for over 5 years now , its much cheaper for the gb i download and the reception is fine for me, i do check the reception areas when moving house. i use VOIP and PS3 online gaming and its been great.

I alwasy check who has the best reception for an areas before i sign up with anyone. Also i dont feel that i have been kidnapped by either carrier for a home phone line

Its not the fastest service and they do not have reception everywhere, although these were the first company to have no contract for wireless ie you can go month to month without being on some crappy cut down plan.

The service has been excellent with almost nil downtime. i would rate them 8/10

  • There is a guy selling similar codes on eBay (only $1.00)! See eBay Item number: 160413626947 Not quite sure what he gets out of it, commission maybe?

    • this is what it is actually referring to , there is a button below the statement to get the access code ie you save $30 and i get $30 of my bill or the person who provides the codes.

Also note you have to buy your modem online to get the discount, personally i got mine from ebay or 9.99 new when they were clearing out.
