What do you think of odometer rollback vehicle?

Hi guys, I am currently looking for a used car and recently I saw a 2007 Camry Altise from a private seller. Seller claimed the car had run 140k and ask for $5000. Odometer shows the same as what seller said.
But I checked by car history and found it should be at least 240k!!
I haven't bought it yet, but thinking the price, it seems to be acceptable even for its actual mileage…
What do you think of that car and is there any problem if I bought it?
Thanks

I also bought a $4 report but it has much less information, though I admit more than $30 for that report is too much. Anyway, if seller can't provide a full service history I will do the same .

@Marsz: the $30 just saved you a bunch tho, so its good return ;) But yeah, it would really add up if you buy reports for more than 1 vehicle during the car search.

@JediJan: the PPSR only shows if the car has been written off, if it has any debts (encumbrance), if it has been stolen. Very limited I know, but sometimes that is enough. The only thing Revs Check is better than PPSR is the ODO windback check, which I don't know how they do it other than checking with RMS? Not sure if you can just call the RMS and get this info?

@Azn310: I think this must be a NSW thing, as Vicroads do not record odo even when transferring vehicle.

        • @fillit: I did some checks the last time, apart from an RACV check, which was very limited. I just couldn't recall who with, and I had also not heard of the ODO check before. As VicRoads records so much information you would think they would do ODO recording too. It would be handy to get all that information direct through them. Many years ago you could ring and get owner details from rego numbers but they stopped that, probably for good reason (privacy).

If and when you come to sell the car, the next person may find out that the odometer is wound back. You may be liable for fraud then.

And if you're thinking you would say it was wound back before you bought it, you'd be shooting yourself in the foot for the second time. You'll have nothing to stand on in court.

  • curious about this said check as well, does it just compare what the odo was when it was last advertised on carsales/gumtree etc?

    • +1

I am curious as well. I guess that data come from logbook services? Not sure.

I can sort of understand if they get it from dealerships as they would have it on record, however if a car is self serviced or an independent workshop there would be no way of actually verifying it.

      • +2

The reading comes from previouse requests by users. As you might remember when you requested for the car history , you were reqired yo enter the odometer reading . therefore it records that as the current reading ( Inc any official insurance/ service readings)

Edward Lee Imports…. the dodgy odometer rollback ba$$turd$.
Bitten by this mob and now they've been found out caught rolling back odometers.

Hi spy, did you get the DB10 Aston Martin from Die Another Day? It was rebirthing from a write off.
Noise was intercepted that Lee was Zao

      • lol

Yes; I wonder how they would catch them out turning back the odometer though. I was suspicious when driving past a dealership not too long ago, (car parked outside) when one person was working with something under dash near driving wheel, while another stood right next to him. They both turned qround and looked back at me driving past. Like unless you saw them with part in hand manually turning it back, how can you tell they are doing it?

Dunno but with some cars, you can just get a second hand cluster with the lower kms and swap it over. Bingo, easy for anyone to do…

  • +1

Dont buy it, theres plenty of other cars in the sea lol

  • dont buy it. if the seller is lying about the kms then what else is he lying about?

  • Some cars you just replace the cluster with one that has less km.

There are a few ways to do this.

It's more likely that car history is wrong, than the odometer being wrong.

  • Most modern cars now require that any electronic components that are swopped or replaced to be recognised by the "main processor that holds the distance travelled" in the car using a tech device to enable it to operate at all and to display the correct info and correctly operate what is connected in the car such as the stereo, "ELECTRONIC DIGITAL" speedometer, air con etc….

  • If you buy this car you become part of the problem in perpetuating the dodgyness

  • It's fraud. Plain and simple. Report it as he's probably done this before and will do it again. While it appears to be no biggie imagine how you'd feel if a timing belt let go and ruined your engine purely because it hadn't been replaced at a specified mileage? Could cost several thousand to fix.

  • Safety >>> $$$…not worth the savings…

  • may they just drive in reverse a lot.

  • I thought only imported cars had the speedos wound back [/sarcasm]

Have you considered that there could be a mistake with the car history? Someone entered 210k istead of 120k and current owner did 20k, total 140k?

Talk to current owner and try to find out, coz if it has only done 140k and it is in good condition then it's a good deal.

If still in doubt then don't buy.

    Good luck.

    • Someone entered 210k istead of 120k and current owner did 20k, total 140k?

This is a great point. Love to see these kind of replies.

    • Actually, the report shows a range of odometer readings, so they look reliable to some extent.

      • TBH I just don't see why someone would go through the hassle of rolling back an odo only 100k which will probably add only $500-$1000 to the value of a 2007 Camry.

You seem doubtful, move on, don't buy.

    Wouldn't touch it

  • +2

seller might be an innocent person who may have purchased the car without knowledge of the km tampering though

should buy car with logbook service history as it has less chance of being tampered with

  • +1

Don't even touch it with a 10ft barge pole if you have doubts about odometer rollback.

  • This is why I don't bother with cars that are listed in Aurburn, Bankstown, Greenacre, etc.
