Travelling to India - Want to Take LED TV with Me

Hi Guys, I am travelling to India and want to take LED TV with me.
Any suggestion on duty payment in India?
Luggage size/weight restriction in Singapore airline?
how/which one to consider for insurance? (for tv only - I am covered through citi signature)

Thanks

Are you sure you can take a 75" TV on the plane?

You know, they do have inflight entertainment.

But seriously, why not buy it there?

I'm pretty sure they have TV's in India.

The chance of your TV getting there with damage is high, have you seen how they treat luggage?

Exactly how large is this TV you want to take?

  • I am not sure if I can take it that's why I ask you guys if anyone has tried it.

My first preference is 65 inch if not then 55 inch

Samsung series 7 and 8 not available to buy in India or at least I couldn't find any reasonable one

What do you mean? The 65" Series 8 TV is http://www.samsung.com/in/consumer/tv-av/tv/full-hd/UA65H800…

Do you mean you couldn't find a good deal?

I personally wouldn't risk sending a $5000 TV as checked luggage. You'd be much better off looking for local stock.

There is no guarantee for example that it will pick up local channels, you'll have no local warranty.

As for insurance find out if your travel insurance will cover it?

  • I have contacted Singapore airlines but everytime I get different answer.

    Exactly pointless comment.

And youd better think about where you will rest your Tv snacks and beverages when chilling on the couch…why not pack your favorite table?

      • Why not get a shipping container and ship your whole house. You will require some cold drinks on the way

  • Package weight: 44.9 kg according to the samsung website. It would be oversize and overweight

    Package Size (WxHxD)
    1425 x 810 x 158 mm

    and 26.1 kg http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/tv-audio-video/television…

    where did you get 44.9kg?
I checked singapore airline website and they suggest that anything above 32 kg has to be sent as a cargo.

    • Someone said 75" hence 44kg.

I saw heaps of Indian guys at Bangkok airport lined up one behind the other with the same samsung TV a few years ago. They were carry plastic bags of on board carry on luggage and had access to priority boarding check in counters.

It looked very much like this was a 'normal' way to import TVs to I am assuming India for some reason. Possibly due to limited domestic availability as OP has suggested.

Hey OP try Bangkok? They probably do it more often through there and might give you better confirmation

  • Thanks for suggestion. I have already booked flights.

  • Sell the tv.

Buy a projector and projector screen.
Your tv will not work once it arrives in India. It will probably be broken in transit.

I'm sure you will be able to buy a tv or a 32inch LED monitor in India. Worst case you will be able to in the neighbouring country of China for very cheap.

It costs $50 to send a pair of shoes in a shoe box to India. I am guessing $400- $900 is the price to send a large tv especially insured.

A 50 Inch tv in China is $300AUD.

  • Read about the new import duty which is 36 % OF MRP OF THAT MODEL IN INDIA WILL BE THE TAX. If this is true u might ofset the savings when u pay the import duty. This was recently introduced when flocks of people where bringing cheaper tv from Bangkok and selling in India for lesser price than locally manufactured same model.

  • maybe try buy a secondhand one on ebay india to pickup close to where you are heading

  • Being of Indian origin I cringe at things like this..Absolute facepalm moment.

Mate I am not being hard on you….You do know that India has absolutely awesome TV options and if they are not there today they will be in the near future…I think India is up to par and even ahead of most countries in getting the latest gadgets and gizmos due to the 300 million strong population who are the middle class….

Have u ever stopped to consider what will happen if your tv broke or needs repairs..when u buy a tv u also pay for the warranty which is part of that cost…So u will be losing out on it…..

Be patient and buy it local….Thats my 2 cents (Adjusted for inflation!)

    • Exactly , i am from indian origin and lived there for 20 years and visit every couple years , i don't see any point people carrying TV's from here . last time when i checked Sony was much cheaper in India than in Australia. Not sure about Samsung but i have seen so many new electronic shops with really awesome offers and 0% interest deals plus free extended warranty when i visited last year . Check Reliance digital they have great deals backed with Service

  • And dont be that Indian guy with a huge tv at the airport that others gawk at…screw them but its not worth the hassle ..trust me man!

put it in a boogie board bag and check it in

Thanks Guys. Decided to buy from local. It is not the high end model I was looking for but will be similar. Thanks for your suggestions.

    • having worked for one of the major airline companies good luck getting it to it's destination in one piece

  • VERY BAD IDEA…

  • i hope u are aware that manufacturers provide u warranty and support for locally bought TV's?

Major manufacturers samsung, sony, pana, blah blah formed a consortium to decide on this. This was done to ensure boost of local sales.
