Mazda CX-5( Maxx Sport) or Nissan X-Trail (ST-L)?

I am looking at buying a new car and I am unable to make a decision between the Nissan Xtrail ST-L or Mazda Maxx Sport, budget is approx 35-37k.
I am not an auto geek, and clueless which one is better in terms of maintenance/servicing & running costs.
CX-5 looks better than Xtrail(personal opinion) but I am not after looks. I give more importance to what is under the bonnet, IYKWIM.

Any observed pros and cons of both vehicles would be appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure about these two cars but have a look at Kia Sportage Sli, the new version has so much gizmos and comes with 7 year unlimited km warranty and capped priced servicing (I think they also give you roadside assistance for the 7 years)

I used to have 2010 model until recently with no issues whatsoever.
See if you can get if for 24h test drive take it home, do all the stuff with it as you'd do on your regular day and then you decide.

    Cheers

CX-5 is the way to go!

The CVT in the X-Trail is fantastic and is fuel efficient as well

X-Trail is shit - I have one. I regret it. Should have bought at CX5!

    • May I know which X-Trail is it? ST-L? any specific reasons why it is shit?

      Thanks

        Xtrail Ti….here is my list;

I hate the auto tailgate. Too slow. If you start the car whilst the tailgate is going down, it will stop. Only way to close it again, is to get out of the car, and press the button. It is that slow, that you can easily start to close it, get in the car and start it.

Lots of rattles. Car is only 1.5 years old and only has 17,000 kms. Developed a new rattle recently, might be suspension. Need to get it checked at next service.

Car had to have a fuel pump replaced because it had issues starting. Took Nissan about 3 weeks to diagnose and get the part.

Door unlock button is also lock. So I go to lock, wife also goes to lock, so I lock, she unlocks and we walk away with an unlocked car. Previous car had sensors to unlock, and button to lock.

Antenna does not fold. So if you are getting roof racks and intend to put something on the roof, the antenna needs to be unscrewed.

I previously had a Mitsubishi Outlander VRX (V6). The Xtrail's lacks in power compared to that, and when you push it, you really feel sorry for it. Fuel efficiency in town is horrible! I am averaging 12.5L/100km. Same as the Outlander. On the freeway it is pretty good.

Speakers are pretty bad. I think the CX5 comes with Bose speakers.

The steering wheel is ultra light. Too light for my liking.

        The turning circle is horrible.

When you have a child booster seat installed behind the passenger seat, the middle rear seat belt is impossible to use for other passengers.

For a car that only came out in 2014 (I believe), there are certain features that are lacking which older cars have. Just disappointed overall. If I had my choice again, I really would have considered a Jeep Grand Cheroke - but I have heard horror stories about those. So sticking to a Japanese car, I would have gone the CX5. The main reason I didn't go the CX5 was I felt the size was smaller than the Xtrail. Maybe take a look at the Honda CRV as well.

        • the cx5 is based on the mazda3 so the nissan equiv would be the smaller qashqai (or whatever its called, awful name).
the mazda cx3 is based on the mazda2 car.

        • Thanks for the detailed explanation.

    x-trail, great vehicle to drive.
we have had one for a few years, no probs at all and fixed servicing costs are decent. mechanics are great, interior is good to, plenty of size for 2 adults and our over six foot teenager.
and fun as a 4wd on tracks like duck creek road.
two friends have recently bought one each as well, one a 2wheel drive, the other the same as ours 4wd (ST not STL)
i think the cx5 will date in looks quicker.

    • thank you

  • Thank you all for the replies.. please keep coming

  • We had an xtrail - had a lot of issues both with the car and the servicing, so wasn't going to buy another.
I'd narrowed the choice down to CX5 (everyone said it was the market leader) or Kia (good reviews and extra long warranty).
Then went for a test drive in a Ford Kuga. Was very surprised - especially with the (new) very responsive engine. Ended up buying an ex-demo model of that.
Only thing - wife hates the name …

    • Thank you

  • Ive owned both Mazda CX5 and currently own Nissan X trailer SL. I prefer the nissan, better fuel consumption, not as many blind spots, some good features.

    • Thank you

  • Hyundai Tuscon definitely deserves some consideration too. This video provides a comparison of the market.

Depends on what you will be using this SUV for, like off roading on the weekends or mainly just a city car with a higher up driving position?

    • Thank you
Ours is mostly city driving. I will definitely look at it.

  • I have 2009 xtrail and have had a number issues with it,such as the transmission needing to be replaced, air conditioner compressor and fuel gauge sensor.

I haven't replace the transmission as that is $6000 but the others cost $3000 all up.

And of course it all happened just outside the 3 year warranty.

    • I think the transmission issue has been fixed in newer models, arent they? I heard they are pretty reliable now, not sure though.

      Thanks

      • Maybe, I'm not sure but I won't be buying another Xtrail.

    • Yes - auto transmission failed in our Xtrail as well. Could not justify putting a new one in so had to have a reconditioned one installed. Very disappointing …

      • which year model is it? failed after how many years, kms?

  • Following

  • Had/have both + two generations of Xtrail.

IMO the Xtrail is the choice if you're not hugely fussy. ie. I see the above owner doesnt like the Xtrail. IMO all those are very minor faults that you will see in any car. Also I feel they are expected in a car for $35k. If you paid $45k then your expectations are too high.

For me the Xtrail is cheaper to insure and maintain. The Mazda to me had unreasonably expensive servicing. I found the Mazda nicer drive but I thought interior room was small for a car that weighs 1.6 ton.

The Xtrail has more passenger and cargo space but its not much, the older xtrail has more.

Now the faults… I dont find the Xtrail to be that economical being a 2.5 PFI four but eh 10/100km is fine especially when petrol is like 99c here. The Mazda 2.5 DI four was more economical.

Also I find the ride to be not great but I didnt think the Mazda was good either.

Either way, I mean the Xtrail cost under $35k for the 7 seat version.

That's good value. Btw. had zero faults in all three cars. I'm impressed with that. We put about 70,000km on the cars in 3yrs then sell them.

    • Thanks

  • What did you end up buying ? I'm in the exact same boat now.

    Both second hand, model 2014 - 2015 … ST-L or MAXX SPORT ?

  • If you don't particularly like the X-Trail interior or certain comfort features, but like the drive then you can't go past the Renault Koleos. It is essentially the same car and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. They share everything from the engine, to the transmission, to the brakes. Even parts such as cabin filters and switchgear is the same. They're quite cheap to fix when things go wrong too, having mostly Nissan parts and they're exceptional value in comparison.
