the question now is: how can I get to and from airport for cheaper than those fares?

Try to get to a public bus stop with bus like 901 that goes to airport?

You might have to consider the transport cost from/to airport at origin/destination. Don't know about you but I wouldn't spend like a couple of hours in a bus to/from mel airport - that would make a 5 hours door to door trip.

        • That's the time you pay for getting a cheap ticket, can't have everything.

        • @kcyw: Opportunity cost :)

Better off just talking a mate into dropping you off. Or catching the Sky Bus from Southern Cross is $18 EW which isn't too bad.

      • Melbourne: There is absolutely no signs to direct you to the 901 bus, but it's actually just about 100 m south of terminal 4. You'll find the skybus bay next to the public bus. Once you get to Broadmeadows station get on the craigieburn line to the city. Allow about an hour of transit time.

Brisbane: catch the free terminal shuttle to the DFO. then catch the 590 bus to Toombul station, then the train all the way to the city. Again, allow about an hour for transit.

Sydney: catch the 400 Bondi bus to Mascot station, then train to the city.

Perth, Adelaide: public transport directly from the airport - 380 and J1/J1X respectively.

Hobart: there is only the shuttle bus for the moment so might as well rent a car if travelling with a few people

Cairns: I think the free shuttle service is now gone, so it's $6 return to the Sheridan bus stop then use public bus to city.

Found all of these out after travelling on these cheap Tigerair flights :)

    • This is the fastest way to the airport, maybe OP can add it to the post. Take train to Broadmeadows station then change to bus 901. This bus will stop in terminal 4. It will only cost you a 2-hour Zone 1 ticket. Don't forget the cost to get to the station as well.

If you are in the South Eastern suburbs, there is Vietnamese airport shuttle service, they will pick you up from your house. The price is not bad if you have more people, they use Citylink so will avoid all the traffic lights. The only catch is that if your flight is too early they may not be available.

      1 ppl is $40
      2 ppl is $60
      3 ppl is $75
      4 ppl is $85
      5 ppl is $95

If you have family with kids, Skybus ticket is cheaper. With new Skybus ticket pricing, you won't save for buying return ticket so just buy one way in case you change your plan, i.e someone pick up/drop off

1 adult + up to 4 children is $25 one way
      1 adult + 4 children is $41 one way

They are smarter now and detect whether a Debit or Credit Master card is used.
It used to be that selecting Master Debit and supplying it a Credit number, the transaction still goes through.

  • Thank you TA. Managed to book Sydney-Adelaide for $26.10. Every time I used to miss out on these deals. This is the first time I got cheap domestic fights. Thanks again.

    • Hopefully, it will be my turn soon. I keep missing these Syd to Adel deals

  • I booked a TigerAir Adl-Syd $29 flight a couple of months ago and a few days before departure, they rescheduled my return flight time to 5 hours earlier than planned and completely ruined my overnight trip plans. They also wouldn't refund the departure flight (despite the fact that my trip was less than 24 hours and obviously was ruined by them rescheduling) so I was out $35 (with CC fees, which they also didn't refund) for nothing and cancelled plans.

Just wanted to give a word of warning as I wish I'd been given one - if you're planning time-sensitive travel, especially overnight/one day trips, be veryy wary of flying with Tiger. I've flown close to a thousand times with dozens of different airlines and never had one do something like that. I'll stick with AirAsia and Jetstar for budget trip needs.

    • thanks for the advice, I kind of expect a lot of their flights to end up 5 or 48hrs hours late given their reputation but never heard of being early and thinking that's ok? I don't fly, I expect most experiences are smooth but there are some doozies and it doesn't seem like there is any sort of recourse. What airline says goes.

    • Sorry you had that experience

I booked a cheap flight MEL to BNE which was rescheduled to depart 5 hours before initial booking time, I was advised 2 weeks before the departure date of the change.

I called the Tiger Air call centre & advised the change was not suitable. They allowed for me to move my flight to a time of my choosing within a 7 day window on either side of the original date. This resolved the issue for me and I was pleasantly surprised at their being flexible after the initial change.
