Contents insurance

I need to renew my contents insurance (renting).

I've had contents insurance with CGU for the past couple of years, but after they jacked up the price I thought I would look around and see if there's a better option.

I've used comparethemarket.com.au to look for some other options. The cheapest was Budget Direct, but people on this site and Whirlpool have advised against them.

Does anyone have any recommendations for contents insurance.

  • I recently got slugged for Home Building & Contents and shopped around, used the comparison sites and everything…

    Ended up with https://www.aami.com.au/

  • Went with woolworths last night for combined home and contents. Insured for 77k worth of contents but in reality was just to insure our wedding rings. Was with racq and they were a pain when it flooded.

  • Nrma has always been the cheapest for us. The one time we've had to claim it was fairly straightforward. We just needed to prove that we'd owned the items we were claiming on.

    • how does that work?

      • how does that work?

Proving that we'd owned the stuff? Receipts, photos, etc.

  • Coles seems cheap.

Coverage terms, claims experience and complaints statistics are far more important than price. Speaking from the perspective of seeing nearly 15 years of our finance clients (motor, mortgage and commercial) who have homes/investment properties, vehicles & businesses they are insuring - cheap is always cheap for a reason. There is no such thing as a free lunch in the insurance game. Chase price after ensuring coverage and terms are identical and you aren't dealing with an insurer that has a reputation for being difficult (resulting in a large number of complaints). You can see the stats for contents insurance complaints here. Check out page 22 of 32. You'll see Allianz is about middle of the road and that CGU actually has very low levels of complaints (possibly why they're a bit pricey?). Our feedback from clients using Allianz has been positive.

    Hope this helps.

  • Thanks to all, especially Naritas.

    • You're most welcome & hopefully your research bears fruit :)
