How Much Do uberX Drivers Get Paid?

Hi Everyone.

According to my calculations. I think uberx driver in australia is the lowest paid legal worker in Australia. Below are my Calculations.

UBERX give driver
$30 per hour
20 % discount in brisbane $30 - $6 = $24
Minus GST $24 - $2.20 = $21.80
Minus Fuel used $21.80 - $4.80 = $16
Minus Tax $16 - $3 = $13
Minus Car Maintenance $13 - $3 = $10
Minus Insurance Exp $10 - $2 = $8
Minus Free Water $8 - $1 = $7.

That comes to $7 per hour for one hour driving. And no Superannuation. UBER Charges 20% of UBERX Driver income which i have not even deducted.

I this this is a big slap on Australain Fair Trading.

Please comment if you agree or disagree.

Please dont use uber. We dont want poor full time working people.

Thanks.

It is unfortunate that the intent of the op's post doesn't really work but, read this article:
    http://citypaper.net/uberdriver/

What the op wants to say it that Uber corporate is ripping drivers off and it's not fair and everyone who uses Uber is supporting this.

Uber also pays minimal tax in Australia and the bulk is sent offshore. This also isn't fair.

While I agree that our cabs are genuinely shite, supporting Uber is the same as saying that the minimum wage in the US is a fair wage, which it is not.

By supporting Uber, you are supporting a multi-national that ships profits offshore and pays USA poverty wages.

Uber pays minimal tax? Most Taxi drivers pay close to nothing by just lying to the ATO.

      Talking facts here.

      • The good old 'cash' only policy.

At least with Uber one day tax laws could be changed to get money out of them.

Block-quote Uber also pays minimal tax in Australia and the bulk is sent offshore. This also isn't fair.

Taxi drivers are the same… Most of the money going overseas anyway plus they never declare the full earnings as they deal with cash 90% of the time therefore less tax.

      • Haha, not talking about the drivers. The drivers are being screwed by Uber so that Uber makes more.

Uber is an American corporation whose only intent is to take as much money as they can legally take from others.

If we allow this business model to operate in Australia, more will come and we should be keeping them out. Look to the USA for how well this is working out for them.

Do we want this for Australia? This is the big question.

        • So make a case to change the multinational tax laws, there are far bigger offenders than Uber currently using our tax system legally and not paying any tax (Some aussies are paying more in interest on a monthly Amex bill than Amex itself paid in tax last year). As long as they work within the regulations of our tax system you can't knock them for that. Changing the tax system is a whole other conversation.

And EVERY business, regardless of which country they are from, is minimizing their tax burden delivering profits is what EVERY business must do. There is nothing special about that business model.

        • @Japius:

Could Walmart come to Australia and pay the same wages they pay their staff in the US?
          No.
          But Uber is.

        • @snook:

If Walmart could make them independent contractors. But the majority of your rant was about them not paying tax. They pay what they have to. As do I. Certainly don't go paying extra just to look nice

        • What you responded to had moved on from tax to the drivers not being paid enough. Same same in my mind anyway. Accumulating wealth at the expense of others, AND ultimately at YOUR expense.

Doesn't matter how they wrangle it, don't pay fair pay/tax? The ones left to pay for it are those remaining with jobs that are paying tax.

Depreciation in car value is also a factor that has been overlooked. An Uber car that does 20-50k extra a year will depreciate much quicker. Not sure if this works out to be better through a tax deduction, or worse off when the car is sold few years down the track.

    • Problem is that most people won't figure this out till its too late.

    • Uberx supports some cheap cars like Hyundai getz which you can pick up for 5k in good condition privately, not everyone is using a HSV commodore or BMW
Its more weird when it comes with uber black, I have been picked up in a commodore here in Adelaide, would atleast expect a car thats lovely inside (25k alfa romeo giulietta is posher)

    • Any idea how much of the depreciation costs can be claimed as a deduction?

Uber should offer its own insurance.

  • Hello guys,
I know the calculations given above is not correct. However, as an ex-uber driver, I can tell you its not worth driving full time.
I think passengers are really happy with the service and therefore, mostly people disagree with the thread creator.

  • Regardless of the actual income received this does raise serious issues that may be more relevant in a decade from now.

A lot of jobs are being made redundant and increased efficiency in those jobs that survive will, due to technology and automation, reduce the need for traditional "full-time" workers.

If anyone here has been on odd-job site Airtasker for a while you would see this inevitable trend in action. When the number of runners saturates the available job supply it gets much harder to score a job and to stay competitive one needs to lower their quotes. When you take into account factors like the 15% Airtasker fee, say 20 minutes of communication, transport costs and say an hour of return travel, a lot of the quotes for a "quick 1 hour job" fall well below minimum wage because people are desperate.

However, the trend towards working-on-demand instead of working a fixed length of hours is inevitable. And frankly smarter. Like any job that relies on instantaneous supply and demand, UberX will become less profitable for drivers as the streets are saturated with Uber drivers. The UberX drivers I know that are most happy with it are those that use it while doing other things - sitting on the couch watching TV, driving to another job in the same direction etc. And this is the direction the world should be headed in. Why do we need to hail a cab from 6 kilometers away when a driver is available next door? We should all embrace systems that are more efficient and reduce pollution and waste. But as more of us get pushed into jobs-on-demand a lot of us will end up frustrated like the OP with income consistency. UberX may just be a taste of things to come.
