Topfield PVR - TRF-7170 - cheapest price

I am currently getting this one for $265 (demo model) at jb-hi-fi
Q1: any other place i could try for a cheaper rate?

My needs are

  1. series record
  2. ability to record 4 TV shows at one time
  3. 1TB HDD
  4. Subtitles
  5. easy to use remote (like foxtel)

Q2: from this website ..
http://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/topfield/trf-7170_pvr/4…

"..and it can record up to 4 program streams from two channels simultaneously."

what does this mean? 4 program streams from 2 channels?
does it mean i can record channel 7, channel 7TWO and 7Mate simultaneously, (all 3 belong to the same network) but i cannot record ABC, Channel9 and channel 7 simultaneously ?

Q3: which other models should i consider?
I am looking for a replacement to my Foxtel IQ2.

Many thanks

  • Yes, your assumptions about the channels you can record simultaneously are correct. It has a dual tuner, meaning it can tune two multiplexes at once (each network is a multiplex).

I have a 7170, but I'm not really up to date with other models.

If it's a replacement for a Foxtel IQ2, I'm assuming you only need the free-to-air channels (retransmitted by Foxtel), and have sufficient reception for getting the FTA channels direct.

  • Thank you..
are you able to get subtitles ?

    • Yes, subtitles are recorded with the video and audio streams, and can be turned on or off during playback or live viewing. It doesn't have a series link function like the iQ though.

  • Thanks

Also i notice that one model 5310 has series record (SR) - all other models have Intelligent recording (IR) - is it worth getting the 5310?
is SR significantly better than IR?

    http://oztoppy.wikidot.com/comparison

  • Oh, hang on. I haven't actually used IR much, but from the manual it does seem to record an entire series (I'm not sure how it handles repeats though).

  • I wonder what the difference is then between Intelligent Record and Series record

    • So do I. The manual for the 5300 series is very uninformative on that aspect. Perhaps they just changed the name.

  • dont think so..

http://oztoppy.wikidot.com/comparison mentions series record is available for 5300 series only.
Most other models have Intelligent record.
