Good Bi-Cycle for Daily Commute in Canberra. (Budget $200)

Hi All,

I am 26 yrs old.I was wondering if I could buy a Bi-Cycle for 200$. I would genrally use it to go to work everyday (4kms to and from)and weekends in bi-cycle trails (may be 10kms/day). I cannot afford more that 200$ (All I can find is KMART and Target and thay dont look promising).

Please help.

You might be able to get something second hand for that price, I would not recommend a Kmart bike.

      Good-bye (new) cycle

Canberra has a heap of cyclists, just keep an eye out on places like Gumtree for second hand bikes around the area or ask at some local bike repair stores as they might know someone trying to offload an older bike.

+1 for second hand. $200 is a good price point for a good second hand bike.

Make sure you get the right size, wrong size is one thing you can't fix easily.
aim for a bike shop brand, eg giant, specialised, Merida, trek etc. NOT Huffy, Cyclops, Repco (except for some vintage Repco models) bike shop brands tend to be better built and easier to replace parts on if necessary.
Think about what/where you want to ride. Do you need gears, Off road ability, a rack to carry stuff, mudguards, racer style to ride as fast as possible?

I have a 2009 ish hybrid bike, quality, but budget, gear on it and once it is repaired and running well will be trying to sell it for around $200.

    • I will note down the brand names. Thank you for providing the right information I am looking for.

I want to ride this not only on roads but also on bicycle tracks near my suburb. Not looking for Gears and shockob's. Simple bike even a second hand one which is good in condition.

Students' last minute panick moving out sale. My brother scored a bike that's around $1000 dollars, with every accessories I can think of (i.e. those computer thingy, lights, locks, helmets etc), for $400 dollars.

Though I don't like using it and it has been in the shed ever since my brother left it here (I don't really like road bikes).

Also, a lot of bike theft happens it seems in Canberra, so I'd make sure I'd invest on an alright lock at least.

for $200 you might be better off looking at something like a fixie.

Not sure recommending a fixie is the best idea, but definitly single speed and no suspension.

Just to add to my previous comment. IF, and only IF you are a competent bike mechanic you might be able to fix up a Kmart (dept store) bike to a suitably reliable machine, but don't buy one with any sort of suspension, and know that the geared ones require a lot of adjustment where a more expensive bike shouldn't need as much adjustment on the gears.

A single speed, non suspension bike is about as simple as a machine gets, the big difference in a Kmart single speed bike is the assembly, which often misses out on grease and has bearings that are adjusted too tight. Fixing those issues is easy if you know how so you only end up with a bike that is heavy and cheap, rather than heavy, cheap and dodgy.

    • I won't buy in Kmart or Target, I went there and have seen the quality of the bikes.

I picked up a great bike on eBay. It took a few months to find a great score but I'm very happy with what I got for the price. $1200 bike for $140.

    • Sounds stolen - careful when riding near police

      • No, totally legit
