    I started off on a Honda CBR125R.
    I chose this motorcycle as I was living in North Melbourne and I rarely needed to go 100kph but it would still do it quite easily on the metro area highways. It was cheap as chips to run and fun as hell. I still own this bike and its currently up for sale on gumtree.. (http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/kingsville/motorcycles/2012-h…)

    After doing a bit of touring (Melbourne to Adelaide and back + Tasmania) on the CBR125R I decided I needed a larger bike that I could carry a pillion with luggage on so I upgraded to a Suzuki V-Strom 650. I own this bike because I can do anything on it, its comfy and still reasonably fuel efficient. Only limitation is the weight of the bike but you get used to it.

    It really depends on your living situation. I have ties to the country so a bigger bike was convenient for me. This is my only means of transport, if I had a car also I probably wouldnt have upgraded to the v strom.
    If I lived in South Yarra and commuted into the CBD I would buy a 50cc moped any day of the week.

    are you a new rider?

    I had an R6, sold it after my car died and i got sick of commuting on it, it is not comfortable and no fun unless youre thrashing those things.

    I was thinking of getting an mt09 or gsr 750 recently

    • getting into motorbike again sometime soon after long time.. intention of post is to see if really ppl ride motorbike these days and have not seen many post on the motorbike.

    Road;
    KTM 990 Adventure, because I want to be like Meoni. I have wanted a go anywhere bike since seeing the 1984 Dakar when Gaston Rahier rode a BMW. Once I started having a good think about it, the KTM is more of an overgrown dirt bike than the BMW. Have been totally happy with it. This was (& is) my first dedicated road bike, and purchased soon after getting off my R-date license (12 month probationary conditions.

    Dirt;
    Gas Gas 300, because I wanted a 2 stroke. Probably should have bought a Beta, only for spare parts in the future because Gas Gas continue to have ongoing financial woes, the bike itself is awesome.

    BMW F700GS. One of the main reasons I went with a BMW was the support and servicing available. In Melbourne it's hard to buy a bike from anyone other than Peter Stevens, every time they touched my previous bikes they did something wrong so I had to double check everything. BMW have been a welcome change.

    • is service expensive and did you score any bargain on this ? :)

        I think it's the cheapest new BMW they sell at the moment. No real bargain unfortunately, except that if you buy parts or accessories buy them online from Europe or the USA, importing will save you 40% off local prices.

    Kawasaki Z1000. Weekend warrior only, mostly during summer.

    '09 Triumph Street Triple, absolutely love it, have had a few bikes in the past and the handling on it is just so easy and nimble, wind protection is shit as all naked goes.

    Used to commute rain hail or shine, but then 2yrs ago got rear ended by some bimbo and I think that's inevitably tainted me to some degree.

    Before this I had a '09 Hornet 600, it felt super planted but heavy, slow speed especially was a lot of work, I eventually sold it and got the Triple instead, and it's just night and day. I mostly commute and occasionally some windy roads on the weekends. Speed was the last concern of mine so when I got it the handling was the absolutely most important thing, the triple engine delivered the good amount of torque low down I needed for commuting and the dual arrow exhaust it came with didn't hurt.

    Downside is comparing to most SS it's not as common and new or second hand parts/bling/protection are not cheap.

    CBR250R, on my P's from next week on ( hopefully ), mostly for fun riding, but sometimes for commuting ( the 6km to work are actually done faster on my road bike ).

    DRZ400
    Dual sport. Love it, plenty big enough to go on a good long ride with gear, still small enough to tear up bush tracks, small enough for this weakling to pick up when I drop it.
    Never have enough time to do as much as I want.
    Keen to do some bigger touring, but work and financial comittments keep me from packing up and heading off.
    Did marathon session of long way round/down on Netflix the other week.

    I'm actually looking for a helmet cam and was about to post for one…nearly got taken out by drugged up driver the other weekend. Police eventually caught up with him, chasing him for other drug related offences, abandoned a chase/pursuit when it became to dangerous not no g after he nearly cleaned me up.
