Insurance Expires Soon but Moving Interstate

Hi Guys.

I am currently in Sydney and having ANZ Third Party car insurance but gonna expire in 1 month.

Also, I am moving to Melbourne with my partner next month. So the insurance will expire before the move and we are planning to drive my car to Melbourne because we don't have time to sell it in Sydney.

So, can I renew the insurance with Melbourne address while the car is registered in NSW's RTA right now?
When I change the car to Victoria's registration. Will I have the same number in the new plate or I have to contact ANZ and make a change?

Anyone has experience about this, please?

FYI, I have got the quote online from ANZ, if I use NSW address, it will be $415 and excess $650, if I use VIC address, $315 and $600 excess.

So will be cheaper and less hassle with VIC but I'm not sure I can do it.

Thanks.

  • Get a cover note before you leave? - Does that still work - I haven't got one in years but it used to be that you had seven days cover and paid the policy premium in that time and if you didn't pay it expired - that's still the practice isn't it?

    • I haven't heard of that before.
All the insurance companies I have used get the money straight away by master or visa cards.
And I usually do it online.

    • think most have changed from cover note to 21 days cooling off period for full refund.

      • That's right, it's 21 days but you have to ask for it. That's what I did recently.

  • You will have a new licence plate number when you move to VIC and re-register the car (unless you buy the same custom plate I guess). Check online for how VicRoads do it, but in the ACT you just fill in a form and take the plates to the office, and they give you new plates. We could have got a refund on the rego, but not the insurance, when we moved interstate.

You can always renew then cancel after you move. They should refund you on a pro-rata basis. Just call your insurer to verify.

    • As ufohunter said, your insurer should allow you to cancel your policy and provide you with a pro-rata refund on the remaining days left.

It's probably worth calling them and asking.

    insure your car as normal
    drive to melbourne
    register car melbourne
ring up change plates/address with insurance

    • As advised by Unclesnake

  • Talk to insurance company, ask their advice in your situation. But be careful they just don't want more money from you!
