Buying an Concert E-Ticket over eBay - Do or Don't

Long story short, I want to buy a ticket to a sold out concert over eBay, the cheapest tickets being around $100. I have been watching one that has been relisted as no one bid, but the seller (who has 98% ) has an e-ticket that would be emailed to the pay pal email address. Is this a do or don't, I'm a bit wary buying a ticket on eBay that isn't a hard copy, but the only hard copy ones available are better seats and far more expensive.

Thanks in advance.

  • is the 98% being a seller or mostly a buyer?

    • Honestly like half and half (143 to 146)

      • thats OK, I was going to buy something the other day (not a ticket) and saw 99%, the item I was buying was the first thing they had ever sold, rating was all from being a buyer. I would skip something like that.

I asume paypal will cover you but how do you know its valid, someone else may have the ticket as well and beat you to the gate .

I asume paypal will cover you…

I was under the impression that Paypal doesn't offer any protection for electronic tickets/codes/keys etc?

        • @StewBalls:
ahh, good to know. I just assumed PayPal covered everything.
          thanks.

@PVA: No prob, I used to think the same thing until somebody here on OzB mentioned it in a post…scary stuff given the prevalence & relevance of e-items nowadays!

        • @StewBalls: ye that's why I'm a little hesitant to buy

        • @StewBalls:

Credit Card charge back covers you and the seller won't be covered by PayPal.

  • problem with e-tickets are that they can be sold multiple times.. so you might get a real ticket, but so might another 50 people.

  • Ask for bank details to pay via direct deposit. If they are sketchy the will be hesitant.

98% positive feedback with a decent amount of items sold. That would give me enough peace of mind to assume the seller is genuine.

I definitely wouldn't buy a ticket from Gumtree, but I've bought tickets via eBay before (both physical and e-tix) and have never had an issue. Just do your normal eBay due diligence (check sellers other items to make sure they're not unloading a heap of tickets, check feedback, check price to make sure it's not too good to be true, check item details carefully) and that'd be enough for me.

  • Be aware the sale of electronic delivery items violates ebay's ToS so the item may not be on sale for long :/

    • Sellers can print them out and mail them to you to get around this term.

      • Yep, but that's not what the seller said they were doing…

an e-ticket that would be emailed to the pay pal email address

        • There hasn't been a single listing removed based on this term, so I don't expect them to start doing it now.

Most sellers have thousands of positive feedback so there is literally almost no risk in buying it there.

Alternatives are Viagogo and ticketmaster resale if you want to use an official platform

        • @Pigey: They do remove other e-delivery items, like phone credit so it might go. Not saying it will, ebay are notoriously patchy at enforcing anything.

jUST DON'T. Under the terms and conditions of whoever is managing ticket sales you can't resell them.

  • If you do buy it.. Get to the concert early, if he is multiple selling them the first person will get in OK
