Need Help For A Toddler Toy Shelving System

I'm looking for deep, large shelf units for bulky toddler toys. I've seen some styles that I like at Pottery Barn (see the links below), but they are so expensive. I got a cabinet maker to quote, and it was even more for the same thing! Ikea, Bunnings, Target, Kmart, Big-W, and Howard Storage don't seem to have shelves that are deep and tall enough for what I'm looking for. I'd like to get 450mm - 500mm+ shelves in depth and almost the same in height for each individual shelf. For future flexibility, I'd also like to be able to stack one shelf unit onto another shelf unit.

I've looked at floating shelves and open basket type shelves (for lots of smaller toy), but don't really like them, and would prefer to stick with shelving units only.

Can anyone help me? I'm in the Sydney metro area.

Thank you guys

  • Ikea's Ivar aren't deep enough? Although by the time you add all the cupboard doors it may be more expensive.

    • Thanks. I'm after side, bottom, top and back walls to the shelf. Front doors are not required. So basically a complete contained unit.

      Thanks for the suggestion though!

  • You could put a backing on to an Ikea Kallax. When assembling you can leave out short dividers to make double sized spots. These are also great for smaller toddler toys that you throw into a cloth box (forget the name)

    • Thanks Kingsville. My sister's got one, but I don't think the shelves are deep enough for me

A bit ghetto, but will do the job. I don't think I would stack them on top of each other though.

    • Good suggestion, and they were the ones that I saw at Bunnings (and Masters as well as Autobarn). However when I saw them, I thought that I'll just be moving my eyesore of toys on the floor, to a 'ghetto' eyesore against the wall!

      • Heh, you'll eventually become blind to it… But once your kid starts playing with lego, your eagle sight come back after stepping on a piece or two.

  • You'd be surprised how much crap you can stack on the top bunk of a double-decker! If I ever disappear from OzB completely, just know that I died bravely under an avalanche of stuffed toys!!! ;)

  • Whatever you go for make sure you get is attached to the wall so the kid doesn't pull it down on itself when it tries to climb it.

  • 2 x $40 what about http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/80261135/ then remove the back off one, arrange them two deep and securely attach them together.

$200 http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/30270137/ and add some shelves in the left side. its a pity the left doors are split and couldnt be cut into shelves.

  • Is there any reason you need back walls? pretty much whatever unit you buy will need to be against a wall so kids don't pull it down on themselves etc. We have the Kallax gloss units from ikea, one in the playroom area, which is white gloss and where we keep a lot of toys. Below is a link for a picture however it's a bit untidy at the moment as the 15month year old pulls everything out and apart! we have another unit in gloss red acting as a kids bookcase in another room. There is plenty of different styles of boxes to get and you can also please items in without boxes and you can add pull out drawers to them etc.

Well I guess it's never too early to train babies to be grocery stockers when they grow up, was what I thought.
