I recently went to revisit a childhood favourite, feeding the birds at Sherbrooke Forrest and was greatly disappointed. I remember there being heaps of rosellas and the occasional king parrot. I remember having having 3 or 4 birds at once on arms, head and shoulders.
This time there were signs everywhere saying not to feed the birds. There was only a small sectioned off concrete area that we had to pay $4 to enter where birds could be fed. We were told to put the food into metal trays and watch the cockatoos eat. There were no rosellas in this area as the cockatoos were much larger and scared all the other birds away.
There were quite a few people feeding the birds in areas where signs said not to feed. In these areas there were a rosellas and one or two king parrots.
Is it illegal to feed the birds in these areas?
Is there a fine they could receive?
Why has the park become so commercialized and unfriendly to visitors?
Where have all the rosellas gone?
You do realise feeding birds human food eg. bread is really bad for them and usually creates a massive mess in the area where feeding is occurring.
In addition with the amount of people visiting this area to feed the birds, it probably resulted in a lot of human related issues - car park problems, rubbish left behind etc etc that the council had to deal with. Do the right thing, abide by the signs and don't be one of those people who thinks the rules don't apply to them - they ruin it for everyone.
