Health Insurance Rebate for Buying Prescription Sunglasses Overseas ?

Hi guys. I'm thinking about taking a break overseas (Kuala Lumpur) and get a pair of sunglasses. Anyone know if I can get rebate from my health insurance? Obviously invoice would not be in AUD. Anyone know it work? Secondly. Singapore airfare seems cheaper. Should I go to Singapore instead and get glasses there. Is sunny more expensive there?

  • Heard this worked before but best to check with your individual health fund.

Spec savers advertised 2 pairs of glasses with no gap and likely you can get one tinted without out of pocket.

So many original DG, Gucci, Versce sunglasses in Australia. So what is the point getting oversea with chance of getting fake? It is saving health fund money and creating jobs in Australia,

Honestly Would rather health fund does not take overseas receipts for which optom code of practice is different, at least not through my contribution.

    • It is not [sic] saving

Why don't you just ring up your health insurance and find out ? Easy and reliable answere :)

  • I suggest you email your insurance company to ask to, 'get it in writing'.

short answer no as you need a provider number when claiming. Overseas providers will most likely not be recognized here by local health funds.

  • If you buy them in Singapore and they are over a certain price you can get a tax rebate.

Does your health insurance give you a full rebate if so why not buy them here? I'd be concerned about paying full price for a fake pair in places like KL.

  • I heard getting glasses in Malaysia is cheaper than local. Secondly glasses here dont fit properly on my face. I think Asian fit glasses would fit me better. I will try contact my insurer to see if they rebate overseas glasses. Thanks guys.
