  • ive never gotten a really good straight answer whats
"5400-7200rpm" mean? does it very depending on load?

cant wait to the 2tbs get to this price point, will be buying four and my system will be complete finally!

    • think of it as the the access speed

      • I assume wisc means … does it run at 5400rpm or 7200rpm?? Coz that confuses me too!

        • +2

5400RPM / 7200RPM is the rotational speed of the disk. How fast the disk spins.
So a 7200RPM disk spins faster so the data passes under the read/write heads more often, so it should have a better performance. Consumes more power and is normally nosier than a 5200 RPM unit.
The green units idle at 5400 and spin up to 7200 as is needed.

          • @w0mbat: so what your saying is veriable depending on load!

            • @wisc: sorry, my mistake. read the question wrong

          • +1

@w0mbat: As far as I'm aware, they never go that fast.

All measuremeants I've seen taken don't have it ever going above around 5900rpm (from memory).

While this isn't the fastest drive on the market, it's surprisingly not that bad performance wise.

    • WD doesn't advertise the actual speed.
The range of speeds given is for the entire Caviar range.

This, being a cool/quiet/eco model, will be towards the bottom end of that range.

  • Model: WD15EARS

WD Caviar Green, SATA Hard Drive, 1.5 TB, SATA 3 Gb/s, 64 MB Cache

Cool, quiet, eco-friendly. WD Caviar Green drives use less power and support quieter, cooler-running desktop PCs and external storage devices.

Ideal For Environmentally friendly PCs and external storage requiring lower power consumption and cool, quiet operation.

  • BTW, 1.5TB = 1536GB

A note foe those using XP:

    http://www.wdc.com/en/products/advancedformat/

I believe the WDxxEARS drives have this feature.

    • Yeah I did some research on this. If you're using XP, run the align tool. Then performance will only degrade slightly - but my thoughts are that this will be compensated for by the 64m cache (as opposed to the old format eads model with 32m)

  • sweet deal just bought one

  • holy crap these are getting cheaper.

  • Great for Sydney people (pick up customers). After adding the postage, the price is about the same as MSY (for VIC people), but I guess you don't need to wait in the queue.

A good deal (hence the positive vote)… pity Aust Post charges a lot to transport items.

    • Not really great for Sydney people. The pickup location is so far away, esp if you live in the CBD.
Good for people who live in the West and can pick it up M-F during biz hours.

For me it's really good because I cannot pickup M-F during work hours, and the pickup location is too far for me to go, ie. petrol is more expensive!

But the "no credit card surcharge for online payment." is also good. Try finding a retailer which doesnt charge you a % for using the credit card. I know MSY charges you!

  • Just ordered one, great price!!!

  • does anyone know if I can pick it up on Saturday?

    • Yes, you can come to pick up on Saturday 10:30 am to 4pm. But you need place an order to reserve the stock for you first. Thanks.
