Honda HRV VS Mazda CX5 VS Mitsubishi ASX

Just curious about other Ozbargainers opinions of these 3 cars. We've been looking around for a few weeks and have narrowed it down to these 3 cars. Mainly due to the sizing and price range. Found the Hyundai Tucson and the Kia Sportage too big.

So the options are:

Honda HRV

Mazda CX5

Mitsubish ASX

Is there anything that I need to know? What to look out for, what is the better car?

It appears that the Honda HRV has an Automatic Continuously Variable Transmission CVT I have heard this is a new thing, is it anything to worry about?

I take it I'd need to get it serviced at the dealership? Appears we only need to service those 3 cars every year depending on KMs travelling and they are fixed priced services.

My knowledge about cars is limited trying to learn as much as I can in a short space of time.

My father says I can negotiate a price through the RAA Fleet club which he did for his Mazda, or is there a better chance I could get a better price by haggling.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thank you.

HRV/ASX is one class of car size below the CX5.

    • So CX5 way ahead?

      Care to elaborate?

Looks like the Mazda will cost around 5 grand more is it actually worth 5 grand more in terms of what you get?

Thanks for your feedback so far.

By class he meant the size of the car. The CX-3 is the comparable "class".

CX-5 competitors would be the Outlander and CR-V.

Subaru Forester 2016 all the way :D

You can always negotiate the retail driveaway price down 10%, just don't do any trade in or get any add-ons or whatever the ming mole tries to sell you. The dealers make 20% off at full price so after the 10% discount they still make 10%

    pm'ed you

    • Thanks.

We find the Subaru Forester too big. Looked at the XV but found it too small for what we were looking for.

        CX5:
        Ground clearance laden (mm) 150
        Overall height (mm) 1710
        Overall length (mm) 4540
        Overall width (mm) 1840

        Forester :
        Ground clearance laden (mm) 220
        Overall height 1735mm
        Overall length 4595mm
        Overall width 1795mm

        HR-V
        Overall height (mm) 1605
        Overall length (mm) 4294
        Overall width (mm) 1772

        ASX:
        Overall height (mm) 1,635
        Overall length (mm) 4,295
        Overall width (mm) 1,810

Forester is only 5cm wider and longer and 2.5cm higher than the CX-5. How is it too big if you are considering a "CX-5 sized vehicle?"

It may just look too big due to the spacious interior and better ground clearance than all the other SUVs. RAV4 does have quite a spacious interior too.

Disclaimer : I drive one 2015 model and am a subaru fanboy :P

        • I am just going by the general appearance looking at the cars. I'm not into FWDs and don't have a need for one.

Thanks for your help so far though, may look into it on the weekend in comparison.

@treeman: huh? The honda hrv is fwd…

        • @treeman: The Forester is constant AWD. Out of your list, the Honda is the only one that's ONLY available as FWD (in Australia at least). Have you tried driving any yet? That's really the biggest test. Sometimes you get in a car and it just "feels" right for you. Hard to explain, but when I first sat in a Liberty I knew it was what I wanted over every other car I'd ever driven.

*Edit: did you mean 4WD? As in the Forester looks the most like a SUV whereas the others are more car-like?

Also my own personal opinion: the ASX is the ugliest one of the lot and I'm really not a big fan of Mitsubishi interiors.

@treeman: "FWD" = Front Wheel Drive, not "Four" Wheel Drive

Tucson then CX5, according to one expert

i prefer the CX5, but I've never driven or owned either….so I'm not exactly an authority

Suzuki Vitara turbo model due in the coming months, makes up for the lack of power on the current model. ~$33,990 drive away with all the fruit :)

    • Never considered a Suzuki maybe I'll have a look at it.

    • Not much information available for that car, but it looks the goods!

      • Based on the current RT-X but without the sunroof

        • I hope its 4WD that is for $34K. I wish it had the sunroof…. I am also searching for a mini SUV but just holding it off and waiting for Vitara turbo.

Any idea when its coming? Mar or Apr?

        • @sab2000:

Yeah about then lol shouldn't be too far away

And it's AWD, same as the current Vitara. Not 4wd like the Grand Vitara

    • the styling looks like an evoque or sport.

      • Yeah imo (biased as it is) they're good lucking cars :)

    • 1.4l is a let-down. they should have kept the 1.6l or bigger.

      • Suzuki is all about economy. It's got enough coz it's a light car, but no doubt the turbo will be a nicer drive

Nissan Qashqai. We were in your boat and we went with the Qashqai and have been very happy.

one nice little SUV. The pick, i think, of all the ones mentioned above.

    • Heard that it has Battery drain problems. ProductReview.com.au has may reviews mentioning it. Has Nissan fixed it?

      • We've had zero problems. Nothing wrong with the battery, second year of ownership.

  • Why people aren't mentioning Toyota RAV4? It keeps it value and goes hassle free for yrs

  • If you are after basic, no-frill compact SUV, Mitsubishi ASX is a great choice. I think its also CVT transmission. Nothing wrong with. I have many friends who were planning to buy Corolla or i30 but moved to ASX. You can have the auto for less than 24K.

shame that the 4WD is not available in petrol. :(

    CX-5 > HRV > ASX

I have been keeping an update on a new family car for the last 2 years as the kids are growing up. CX-5 is the best of the lot hands down but I am afraid you are paying extra for it. HRV is relatively good but not in the same class as the CX-5. Never liked the ASX for some reason and it's getting old to be replaced soon.

Honda Jazz, Mazada 3 and Lancer on stilts.

Why people insist on buying these when the car version is usually the better and cheaper choice I'll never understand.

    • Lancer on stilts

They also like to call it the 'jacked up lancer'.

  • A mate of mine went thru the same and ended up with Hyundai Tucson Elite. If you aren't averse to Hyundai, then give it a go

  • Have owned a CX5 for the last 3 years and a Mazda 3 for 3 years before that. Absolutely no issues and real pleasure to drive. Would buy a Mazda again when we upgrade to 7 seater as well.

  • If your budget includes a CX-5, a Honda CR-V AWD is easily attainable for the same, if not cheaper. At my work we have various company vehicles, including a CX-5, a CR-V (mine), an X-Trail, a Forrester and a Rav4 (previous shape, though).

I dismissed the Rav4 as they deleted quite a few options that I liked on the new model that the previous one had, and ended up with the CR-V as it was significantly cheaper than the CX-5. The only thing I dislike about the CR-V is the touch-screen headunit, which lacks the tactile feel traditional headunits have. Some of the good things are the plentiful USB & 12V outlets (2 USB, 1 12V & 1 HDMI input in the centre console alone).

Ringwood Honda (if in Victoria) was significantly cheaper than other Honda dealers in Victoria too.

The CX-5 is also a great car though - having driven my officemates one a few times, I would be happy with that one too. Just take each of your choices for a few drives and see what you prefer. The new Forrester having dropped from a 2.5l (or 2.6l) to a 2.0l engine feels sluggish in comparison.

  • Go for Hyundai Tuscon.

    • I agree. This is the best review of the Tucson and its comparison to other rides http://autoexpert.com.au/hyundai-tucson

Don't know y ppl neg when they don't like a commodity. Everyone has freedom to express their view/feelings. Negging is not the way. Express the view why you didn't like particular commodity .

if i was in the market for one of these cars id be going for the base model outlander or CRV - these "baby" SUVs have all the bulk with none of the actual convenience (size-wise).

under $25k will get you a base CRV or outlander (6sp manual) which will be more than capable of all the family hauling and weekend warrioring that you might want to do with them :)

EDIT - the ASX in particular is quite dated now. Not a terrible car and some cheap deals going on them at the moment but they are really just a tall hatchback - if you are going to bother getting an SUV you should at least get something that's nice and capacious.

ford kuga is an oft-forgotten option too. if you get one with the 2L ecoboost engine you have a proper hot SUV on your hands (nearly as much power as the focus ST).

  • Friend of mine just ordered a 2016 build Mazda CX5 Maxx 2.0 FWD auto in Melb metro. Will arrive in a couple of weeks. PM me if you want a price.

They were looking previously at the smaller SUVs (ASX, HR-V etc) but decided the CX5 was a better fit (young family) at not much more $$$.

  • Any reason you haven't considered Nissan X-Trail? It is around the same price range as CX-5.
I am looking for a SUV too, and I am considering between X-Trail(ST-L) and CX-5. There are pros and cons in both of them which is making it hard to decide :(
