Looks like telstra have a new deal going on, forgive me if this is a duplicate.
A good alternative to the Virgin plan if reception is more important to you than the extra 5GB

$40 Per month, 12 Month contract.
5GB Data
$1000 Talk Credit

New customers only, I presume you could port out and then back in

  • $1000 Talk Credit

Can that be used for all call types? inlcuding International ?

What's the deal with SMS? Is that part of the 'talk' credit?

    • I have this plan from the previous deal. If i remember correctly on my contract, they state this includes national calls only.

      Unlimited SMS to national.

      • Yes - It is use within Australia only:

        What’s not included
Your Monthly Call Allowance and Monthly Data Allowance can’t be
used overseas. Your Monthly Call Allowance doesn’t include calls,
SMS or MMS to international numbers, premium numbers (eg 19xx
        numbers) and some satellite numbers, 1234, 12 455 and 12 456
numbers or content charges (including third party charges). Charges
for all calls, SMS and MMS not included in your Plan can be found at
        telstra.com.au/customer-terms

Virgin is great if you need to call 'unpopular' overseas countries often.

        thanks for that…

Virgin includes international calls and rolls over data and calls for 1 month…

I guess it all comes down to how good your reception is where you mainly use the phone…

        • Yeah virgin seems like a better deal… the reception in my area is terrible with Optus and Virgin though so I can't use them.

  • New customers only, I presume you could port out and then back in

Your account will still be there, even if you port out.

    • Wait 6 months

      • will the deal still be available then though?

      • Or just tell Live Chat you'll go to the Virgin 10GB plan unless they offer you this (or better…). Most likely they'll at least give you this offer.

I tried they said no, i gave up and moved to Vodafone $40 for 10GB with half price first month and 2 months free unlimited data workout.
Vodafone speeds faster than Telstra Prepaid at my work desk.

          Winning

        • @Turd:
          Wow. Didn't know that existed.
I'd cane that unlimted data for 60 days!!

        • +1

@albanyson: Im trying to it is hard. Ive been streaming 163 music app. Did 500MB first day, 400MB 2nd day, 388MB 3rd day and today only just 50MB so far.

          😎

@albanyson: lol I already have unlimited TPG ADSL at home. I dont download that much as I used to anyways. But being able to stream music is pretty good.

Nothing else I really want to download, Ive already downloaded the whole internet many years ago and wasting space for data.

    • I did this for the 7.5GB $200 joining credit deal and it worked. Ported out to Optus and back to Telsra as soon as the number was active and it worked. As long as it's a new account number should be no issues.

  • How much google play credit can be used in this plan?

    • +2

Pretty sure that's limited to Pre-Paid

      • hmm, should post paid customers be more valuable than prepaid? anyways thanks for the info, will stick with prepaid for next couple of years till they give me a unlimited plan for <$10 :)

        • +1

Freedom Plus $40 is better value anyway, esp. when taking the Google Play Credit into account.

Completely agree. I'm on the old $55 plan on postpaid and I'm moving to prepaid. Ridiculous that they offer better deals to their prepaid customers than those willing to sign up to a contract.

  • They had a similar deal before Christmas but it was the month-to-month, not contract (not sure on all the allowances included, probably not as good as contract, but it was the $50 plan, and you paid $40 instead), but I couldn't get it in time as I found out about the deal too late :(

  • I'd rather go for $40 Freedom Plus pre-paid? Unlimited calls, etc + I can use the credits for all other bunch of stuffs. Data is not as many as this plan though

    • Depends if they extend the Night Data Bonus expiry

  • What if compare with Optus Deal - $40 BYO plan + 7GB
    http://www.optus.com.au/shop/mobilephones/SimBYO#

    Any recommendation?

    • Optus has unlimited calls rather than $1000
      Also includes some international minutes
      Extra 2GB data

Arguably telstra have better reception though, definitely in regional areas.

      • I see but Optus also cover almost of area, right? And if in the hills and CBD, that's a minor issue.

        • 3600 towers vs 3300 towers .

        • @garage sale:

Living in a regional area, I can say that optus has better speed in town but telstra cover a larger area out of town and on the highways… Mightn't be the same for all areas

  • +3

They offered 7gb before. Also less than what Optus and Vodafone offer.

    • They aren't comparable products to many people though. Even in parts of Northcote (7km form Melbourne CBD) Optus reception is patchy. At my parents on the Sunshine Coast it's the same. I've used Telstra all over Australia without issue.

  • I reckon this is a good deal, comparable to Boost's $40 effort. Keep in mind though, this deal is 12 months - 365 days. Boost's pre-paid is 30 days - x12 is 330 days equivalent. Telstra $40 pre-paid is 28 days - x12 is 336 days equivalent.

    • Is it 12X30? you made an error there

    • Telstra $40 pre-paid is 365 days if you choose to automatic recharge.

  • Just had a chat online, and prepaid customers are ok. I explained that my other half is on Telstra prepaid. I said that she is basically a new customer as she would be given a new number and won't retain her Telstra Pre-paid number. The rep said 'cool' lol. This is her words:

"I am sorry that pre-paid Telstra customer consider as a existing customer. However, if she gets the new mobile number then she will be considered as a new customer".

    Hope this helps.

    • Called them and they let me upgrade as an existing customer

just signed up and got this message on my email receipt,

"If you're a new customer & you sign up online, you'll get a $10 a month credit on your bill when you sign up with us on selected plans. The credit will start on your second bill.
Offer ongoing until withdrawn by Telstra."

seems a little dishonest to claim it is $40 per month, when it's $50 for the first month!

  • FYI, just chatted to an online rep and she said limited time they are offering 7GB on this plan. Makes is a little more appealing.

Also, would someone mind explaining the Pre-paid freedom thing and the credit. I have never been pre-paid before, I don't really understand how you end up with 'leftover credit' at the end of the month.

    Cheers
