Gas and Electricity Discount

Hi all, it's time for me to find a new Plan for my gas & electricity bills.
I live in NSW, I was on AGL Smart Saver 20 for both gas & electricity (20% off when paid on time).

I saw on another post that Dodo has 20% off plan too, but the rate is slightly cheaper.

Electricity
AGL
0.2478/kwh
0.7307/day supply charge

Dodo
0.2175/kwh
0.7399/day supply charge

Gas
AGL
0.03524/MJ
0.5239/day supply charge

Dodo
0.0399/MJ
0.5390/day supply charge

All prices ex GST
Is there any better deal out there?

Also AGL don't have 20% discount anymore for Gas plan, only 20% electricity - 14% gas (12 months contract)

  • PLEASE make sure when looking at discounts, the discount also applies to the daily charge - that's usually a big proportion of the bill !

    • Not the case with AGL. The 20% discount only applied to electricity or gas usage.
      I'm not sure about Dodo

Edit - I had a look on fine print and Dodo also apply discount only on usage.

      • that's my point

        find a company that does

        • Any recommendation?

        • -8

          @cimot:

omg - seriously? do you want me to hold your hand as well?

@oscargamer: Chill out.. don't get offended.
This is a forum. People give recommendation to each other all the time.

        • @cimot:

Red Energy give 10% off usage and supply charges, depending on where you live, their base rate is likely to be a fair bit lower than AGL's as well (assuming the AGL one you have listed is excluding GST)

        • At the moment I don't think any supplier applies these discounts to the daily charge.

  • have a look at: https://alintaenergy.com.au/nsw/electricity/our-rates

(I am on 26% discount with AGL - only obtained after porting out and then they called me with the offer, so I cancelled the port)

That's a good way to score extra discount.
What I notice is AGL increase supply charge rate and decrease per MJ rate for Gas, thus making the discount less effective.

      • You really have to know what your usage is like and calculate different providers to see which offer you the better deal. I got the same offer battler did with AGL 26%, and it turns out to be a better deal for me there as well than other providers. Don't forget those per MJ rates have several tiers, so you might hit the next tier and the prices will be different between the providers.

        • I am trying to call and get this discount at the moment. Most i have managed to get them to offer is 22%e and 14%g…. think that has just been normal care/sales teams though not retention's team…. try again tomorrow i guess! I was going to port to Alinta but it appears their 25% discount has been lowered to 20% recently?

    https://www.energymadeeasy.gov.au/

This has details for what is provided by different providers in each state.

I went with Alinta 20% Fair Go in South Australia

    • That's a very good comparison website…
      Thanks for that

      • It's not ideal, when I tried extracting the data it didn't come out in excel in a nice format.

  • I get 28% on electricity and 14% on gas with AGL.

    • how did you get that 28%?

      • They had an online promotion back in August and also $50 credit for both electricity and gas first bill.

What I found so far, even though Energy Australia giving less discount % than AGL, the bills came out cheaper.
AGL give fantastic % discount, but their rate is much more expensive than the rest.

  • I am with Simply Energy. They give discount on both supply and usage charges.
18% on gas and 32% on electricity. Requirements were i) pay by direct debit and ii) RACV Service Membership.
Tariffs (ex GST) are i) Gas - Supply charge $0.659 and usage $.0181 / mj
ii) Electricity Supply charge $1.1389 and usage $.2303 / kwh

  • Really, really hard to compare as it depends where you are and who the supplier is. It also of course depends on other factors such as meter type, peak/off peak capability & choice, and personal usage. There are online comparison sites out there, but basically I'd just get quotes and put them in a spreadsheet and then compare them based on your actual usage patterns - in particular if you do have peak/off peak capability. For me, I found that moving to Momentum Energy was best, but I know others when comparing have found Red Energy to be better because the supplier was different. Now that's in Melbourne so no idea about Sydney.

Again, just for where I am in Melbourne my last bill (ex GST) was:
    [electricity]
    $0.6513 per day
    $0.1227 - off peak
    $0.2215 - peak
    $0.60 - solar feed back

    [gas]
    $0.5814 per day
    off peak Step 1 - $0.01353; Step 2 $0.01208
    peak Step 1 - $0.01493; Step 2 $0.01317

  • Thanks guys for all the response.
Nowadays all of these gas & electricity plans are as complicated as choosing mobile phone plans.

After comparing some plans, I decided to stick with AGL and getting 20% off gas&electricity usage.
With my usage, the differences are minimum (less than $5 per quarter for both gas + electricity bills).

  • Dodo's rate goes up (considerably) after a certain usage level. AGL's is fixed no matter how much you use

    i signed up to AGL
