Vodafone is offering 90 days of free roaming in NZ per calendar year on "eligible" mobile plans. This means a $5 saving for every 24 hour period you use your mobile phone in NZ.

  • Calls from NZ to standard Australian numbers are deducted from your cap as if you were in Australia
  • Calls to standard NZ numbers whilst you're in NZ are deducted from your cap.
  • Need to confirm if Data is deducted from caps. Data usage is also deducted from your cap. Excess is calculated based on standard rate in Australia. Thanks theguyrules

Automatically available for customers signed up to a plan after 23 April 2014. If you signed up to an eligible plan before 23 April 2014, you can activate $5 Roaming in My Vodafone.

I am glad it's not the other way around

    • Well it IS OzBargain, not the kiwi equivalent. Would be interesting if they had the same deal for kiwis to go to Aus, or if they're left out again.

      • maybe check on ChoiceCheapies?

        • +3

i was trying to be offensive and all i got was an upvote :(

        • @thelastnoob: Yeah Aussies are too dumb to get jokes. :)

  • Nice!

RE: Data, as the $5 roaming includes data from your caps, you would assume this would too.

  • Wonder if you can get this on a SIM only casual post paid plan.
The $5 a day for other countries looks good compared to other carriers.

    • Yeah you can get it on a month to month red plan AFAIK.

I used one just to travel around Europe.

      It was well worth it

excellent news, i'm not with vodafone but i'm definitely happy to see the progress being made on roaming in general.

  • Glad to hear this as I plan to go NZ for a few days next month, could save some $$ :)

  • I am currently getting $10 travel pack free for 10 days a month on my Optus plan.
But this deal is also pretty good.

Besides the fact that they cost twice as much as Vodafone, Optus travel packs are fine if you just want calls, but the data allowance is dangerously small. The danger is that you could exceed 50MB without even realising you have done so, thanks to today's smart phones and their "always-connected" apps, and it could cost you a small fortune in roaming fees.

      $10 OPTUS TRAVEL™ PACKS
If you're roaming in zone 1 countries with your Optus mobile on a plan, you can get great savings by adding $10-a-day Optus Travel™ Pack to your plan before you go.

Unlimited standard national and international calls
      Unlimited standard SMS
      50MB of data per day

Vodafone lets you use your entire "Data Cap" overseas 5GB, 10GB, etc - whatever your regular monthly cap amount is, that is what you have to use overseas.

The other issue is that with Optus you have to add the "$10-a-day Optus Travel™ Pack to your plan before you go" whereas with Vodafone you can "activate" a 24hr roaming period just by initiating a call, SMS or data session if you decide you want it while you are overseas (not an issue for you congngo, until after you use the 10 free ones).

Fair point. 50MB isn't much. I had to disable all my apps except from whatapp and email. Had to also disable wifi assist and background apps. Disable autoupdate and auto download.

I travel oversea each week and only use the travel packs every alternating days.
To activate I do it using their Optus app the night before. Hasn't been an issue for me.
The 90 days would only last me three months, while with Optus it would last me for the entire of the plan.
This is the biggest benefit especially for someone who would be oversea for several years.

    • How are you getting the $10 travel pack for free?

      • Part of the Optus offer posted earlier on Ozbargain.
Plan is $100 pm for iPhone 6s for 20GB plus 10 travel pack pm.

  • Great deal

  • I don't understand why people would pay $5 a day in nz. Their prepaid sims are cheap, and if you are on iphone Imessage works the same, and so does fb messenger.

Some people can't be arsed doing that on holiday, especially if you're only there a few days. For less than the cost of a beer a day, you can still receive calls from home, and call and text Australia and Inzid (unlimited on most plans now), plus use all the data in your allowance.

For business people, it's usually even more important to be contactable on your normal number.

if I was on Voda, I might consider just forking out the $5/day, but last visit I went for a Skinny mobile SIM, which included unlimited texts back to Oz.

      • Fair enough for business trips. But if I'm on holiday I'd rather have the beer a day than receive calls.

I've always turned off the $5 option as its a rip off. If you only send 1 text, or make a quick call in a day, its cost you $5.

    • +4

      Rip off?
You can choose not to use the roaming which you state you do.
I went to Thailand last year for 6 days and it cost me $30 and I had unlimited calls within Thailand and to and from oz. unlimited sms and I could use my data allowance.

Yeah one text or call triggers the charge for that day but it's super easy to avoid but yea probably not suited to someone not using it much each day.

I found the option of using Google maps and the like worth the $5

If you want to define rip off you should probably check out Telstra roaming charges.

      • +1

Telstra roaming charges are not that bad as i thought it would be..

35$ for a week in New Zealand.. can't be categorised as ripoff..

        • Yeah NZ is quite fair on Telstra its when u go UK, US etc that you get stung.

    • +2

depends on your usage really. Hardly a rip off.
