International EFTPOS Cash Withdrawl. Can It Be Done?

Just wondering if we can use a Citibank Plus card, or possibly a 28 Degree card to make a cash withdrawl from an international Eftpos location (for example, at a supermarket). If so, would it attract a fee?

  • Well I know a French person who tried to do it at Coles here in Australia with her French card and it didn't allow her to do it.

No, because the EFTPOS system is only in Australia. Other countries have similar card/bank systems, but not the same. If you had an older-style EFTPOS/ATM only card it wouldn't work at a supermarket overseas at all. Since your card is also linked to the Credit Card networks, you can get money internationally through the credit card "cash advance" feature at a suitable ATM, which may or may not attract fees depending on your bank/card issuer and the ATM. You can also pay with it through the "credit" feature, but there's no EFTPOS-style "cash out" with purchase feature on the credit card networks.

  • Cheers Lupiter, very thorough.

GE Money / 28 Degrees put up a post suggesting using Casino's as a possible international cash pathway. Ie. purchase $200 in chips on credit, then cash in the chips. However, I'm sure the casino's would charge something…

  • I think they pretty much work anywhere that accepts VISA and I'd assume the store accepts any involved fee's. Citibank won't charge you for currency conversion on their end.
