Parts Recommendation for new system build required!

Hello OzBarginers,

I have always built every PC I've owned…but haven't built one now for about 10 years. So, I am looking for recommendations of parts to build a new PC. I dont want to spend months reading so I am hoping this community can help me narrow things down. I have provided some details below;

Primary use : Main use is for work…running several virtual environments and machines.
Secondary use : Gaming, Internet, movies, TV.

Motherboard : not sure what is out there…but I do have a bias toward Asus.
CPU : whatever is the best to support virtualisation and some good gaming
RAM : At least 16…32 would be better.
HDDs : I have several already, so the MB should be able to support at least 5
GFX : Dont know. Probably something mid-range, but would like to run some good games.
Case : Dont know…whatever works best in terms of air flow and stability

Budget : Dont know…I will spend the money for a a good system. But I dont want to spend big bucks on features I wont use.

Thank you all. Hope you can help.

  • Part Item Price
    CPU Core i7-6700 462
Cooler Coolermaster Hyper TX3 EVO (optional) 38
    Mobo ASUS Z170M-PLUS 199
    Memory G.Skill DDR4-2800 16GB Dual Channel Ripjaws Kit 165
    Storage Samsung 850 EVO Series 250GB 129
    Video Sapphire Radeon R9 380 4GB Dual-X 321
Case Corsair Carbide 300R / Fractal Design CORE 3500 109
Power EVGA SuperNOVA 750W B2 Power Supply 129
    1552

CPU can be dropped down to a Core i5 6600 ($333) — would cost you around $1423 for the whole build.

VM is more memory / HDD intensive that it is CPU intensive, so depending on your workload a Core i7 may not be neccessary.

    • Thank you. I will do some reading on those parts. The only thing with your list is that I'd increase my RAM.

      • RAM can always be added later if it's not enough. Keep an eye out for those Amazon deals — it's one of those parts that can be bought from USA for relatively cheaply compared to buying locally. You do however lose local warranty and would have to ship it back to the manufacturer yourself in case it dies.

You could try getting a 32GB RAM kit from http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MMLUYQK, which equates to $204.66 AUD delivered. Certainly beats paying 299 for it locally.

  • Hey man, take a look at what the community at /r/buildapc have on offer. Very useful sub!
