Buying interstate car; rego and CTP question

Hi, if I buy a car from a vic dealer and it comes with 10 months vic rego. And I live in NSW, can I keep the Vic rego till it runs out before registering in NSW?

If not, is stamp duty incurred both in Vic and subsequently NSW?

Thanks

  • Thanks,

    I have read that link.

I was hoping someone might be able to clarify whether the interstate registration could be utilised or if it is mandatory to register in NSW immediately?

    Separately does VIC have CTP?

How about reading the link that Airzone kindly gave you carefully.

      Interstate vehicles

You can drive a vehicle registered in another Australian state or territory in NSW. If you’re only temporarily in NSW, you don’t need to get NSW registration as long as your vehicle displays all the number plates and registration labels required by the interstate authority.

If your vehicle is no longer temporarily in NSW, you should apply for NSW registration.

If you live in NSW its going to be bloody hard to say you are only here temporarily.. You have to change your residental address to Vic remember electoral rolls etc.

Now what does "temporarily" mean. Will you get busted for a few weeks? - very unlikely but the longer you delay it the less argument you have

      • "should" not "must"

        very very different legal meanings

        • Very correct, thats why I m glad I didnt say they must.

I guess they can just ignore it and motor along. Problem is that for the small savings is it worth any complication and time that it would take to argue etc about this.

In the old days driving interstate cars had some benefits when the state systems weren't linked, fines etc. But thats long gone.

Your advice below is very good info

        • @RockyRaccoon:

i agree, you didn't say they must, but you referenced "you should apply for NSW registration"

you do not have to re-register the car to NSW immediately, or ever, to be honest

    VIC does not have CTP

you pay stamp duty in the state in which you transfer it into your name. so if you buy in VIC and transfer it into your name in VIC, you pay VIC stamp duty. when you re-register it into NSW rego, it is not a sale to another person, so no stamp duty is required

just make sure that the dealer doesn't cancel the rego after he sells it to you - it happens very very regularly and they do it before transferring into your name

after you take possession, check the VRE website a week or so later to confirm it's still registered

    • Thanks oscargamer,

The Stampduty component I couldnt find anywhere, but what you said makes sense.

Registration in NSW would occur this Fin Year, but I wanted to get a better understanding of what 'could or should' happen given there is a lengthy VIC registration with the vehicle and whether this goes to waste if mandatory to register within a set time frame in NSW.

If VIC registered Vehicles dont have CTP, are there other implications of driving a VIC registered vehicle in NSW?

      • Once bought, you can cancel the vic rego, take the money and reg it in nsw. Maybe never transfer it in Vic. There are lots of options. Whatever works for you.

Regarding insurance, you'll have to work that out for yourself. WAY too many implications if I get it wrong.

  • What about WA? Read that to be able to transfer the licence to WA, the vehicle should be under applicant's name for 12 months.

So, if the car is coming from interstate. Buy car, transport to WA, use it for 12 months (from date of purchase), then transfer?

What if car is already in WA but still with interstate licence?
