HDD's - What are failing?

Hello all.
In my PC i have my Main HDD (298gb) for Windows
Then i have my Backup HDD (WD 932gb) for storage
Then i have a Spare HDD (Seagate 932gb)

My question is should i replace any of these as my main windows or backup and get rid of one of them?
If its recommended to buy a SSD (which i will when i can afford) should i continue to use the 298gb HDD for that.
Based off those results, is there anything i should look out for?

Especially if the main hdd is showing signs of failure, it's probably time to replace with an SSD.. Your PC will love you for it. The 300gb unit is probably not going to be reliable for ongoing use..

    • Thanks, Yeah i seen that.
I probably cant get a SSD till June. I know its only $100… but in saying that.
In relation to the other two drives, should one be the daily driver from now on and backup kept as is or changed to the seagate one?
The cycles on the seagate are high but temps and hours are lower so im wondering if that should be the main backup.

To make life easier for you, see if you can shrink one of the 1tb disks by 300gb, and then clone the partition from the 300gb disk onto it. Something like easeus partition manager will help you do this.. There's a bit of stuffing about to get it right, but the PC will behave in much the same way and will be straight forward to dump the boot partition onto an SSD later..

        • Sorry i dont understand what you mean? ELI5? haha

        • @trips:
If there is a 300gb of free space in any of these:
Backup HDD (WD 932gb) for storage
          Spare HDD (Seagate 932gb)

Create a 300gb partition from your chosen HDD and clone your Main HDD into it.

Then you can keep your Main HDD for safekeeping and use the new 300gb partition from your Backup/Spare HDD as your new main HDD until you can afford a new SSD

When you get your SSD, clone this 300gb partition into your SSD

I know others might find it a hassle but I think a 120GB SSD is fine for a boot drive (Windows + Apps) and then save all data to your storage drive (also alias your 'Documents' and other personal folders to that drive for convenience). Mine is setup like this and I have half of my boot drive still free. I only mention it because a 120GB SSD might be affordable to you now (~$60):

  • At current price you can get 250 or even 500GB cheap.
Use that as boot and primary app drive.
The large 1TB use for large data (videos etc) and OS backup if you like.
300GB seems small and therefore old. Definitly replace.
Check the others with for health issues.

  • Thanks everyone.
But in terms of the two 1TB HDD's.
Which one should i keep the other throw.
Based off that image, what is failing more than the other, i dont understand life cycles, uncollectable error counts, cycles etc

  • This is the tool I use to determine if my hard disk are on the way out:
    http://crystalmark.info/download/index-e.html

Use the Standard version - Portable w/o Ads (zip)
    Unzip and run the exe

If the big rectangle under health status (top-leftish) is blue and says good, then the hard disk is ok
If it is yellow (caution) or red (bad), I would be expecting the disk to fail soon (although might still last a while, but not worth the risk in my opinion), and I would be making a backup of all the data on that drive as quickly as possible.

    Good luck!
