Best Monitor under $500 for Photo Editing

A lot if reviews recommend the Asus PA248Q, but that monitor seems to be unavailable in Australia.

  • I bought this for 450, 3 months ago just by doing the live chat with the sales rep:

I don't use my computer in a studio/photoshoot environment, but the colours does look much, much prettier vs my old LG monitor although that's a given.

Prior to buying this in-depth review gives it a pretty good verdict: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2515h.htm

What you want to look for is a monitor that is IPS and can display 100% of the sRGB colour gamut. I have a BenQ GW2765 which suits this and is around $500. You can get fancier monitors that will display 100% of the AdobeRGB colour gamut amongst other things, but the law of diminishing returns apply heavily here, you'll be paying heavily for something that isn't all that terribly useful for most people.

    • That dell monitor is both IPS and "99% sRGB" furthermore dell monitors tend to be of rather high quality.

  • How serious are you about the photoediting?

If it's just somewhat part time hobby work, you can probably get away with a slightly cheaper monitor. However, that dell one that burhanr listed is a safe bet. Dell monitors tend to be of pretty high quality.

edit: That monitor also comes factory calibrated. They even give you the values.

    From the review link above

"The Dell U2515H comes factory calibrated, showing their focus on providing a high quality product suitable for colour critical work. Like other recent UltraSharp models the screen is packaged with a calibration report unique to your unit, confirming the targets set and met during that process. "

    • It is the only reason I'm buying a monitor :-) So reasonably serious!

Does anybody have experience using the HP 23CW or HP Z23i? Some sites rate these two as well and they are cheap (around $250-290)

In that case the dell one really is your best bet. I know, trying to find a bargain, but for this sort of work you want something really high quality. The fact that you don't have to calibrate is a nice bonus.

Based on the model names those monitors look to be 23" size which explains the price difference. http://accessories.ap.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=au&l… is the 24" version of the same dell monitor for $390

Anyway they'll be much cheaper for a reason. The panels look okay at a quick glance, though the specs aren't as good as dells. HP Z23i http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=c04128…

Really you need to look into in depth reviews, with reviews designed for photography and other colour sensitive tasks and not gaming and see what they are like.

        • Thanks! Been reading photo editing reviews for the last two weeks. Decided to ask actual users to get a better feel.

        • @Bargainbru: Let me know what you choose. I'm interested myself!

Almost brought that dell monitor already haha.
